AIBU?

To be getting increasingly pissed off at receiving constant random emails from complete strangers?

This morning I got an email from a website/company I have never heard of in my life. The email said something along the lines of "this is about your mailing list and how to change your subscription, blah blah blah". I assumed it was a mistake and thought nothing more about it.

This afternoon I received an email from some woman I don't know saying "take me off the list I did not subscribe to anything." I thought this was rather odd, but again just ignored it as maybe it was sent to the wrong person.

Over the course of the evening I have gotten more and more emails from different people saying the same things, to stop emailing them and take them of the list, they have no subscribed etc etc Confused.

Getting extremely annoyed and a bit worried I emailed the address that sent me the email in the first place and told them what was going on. Several seconds later I got an email back saying my email had failed to deliver because the email address I sent it to did not exist Hmm.

Confused, I emailed one of the people to sent me a email asking them how they got my email address and that there has been a mistake, hoping they would shed some light. But there has been no response.

The emails from random people are still coming through, some of them quite nasty and I am sitting here wondering what the hell is going on. This website has sent out emails to people, but when people are replying back to the website it is somehow getting forwarded to me, and the email address provided by this website doesn't exist Confused

Sorry this is so confusing but I honestly don't know why these emails are being sent to me. They are from different people and have no idea why I'm getting them or how to stop them Sad

This is why you have two emails - one you use for online buying etc, and is likely to be sold on to companies and your private email for family correspondence.

Unless you have adequate firewalls, random emails will come through that are generated - if you respond to them it just tells the company your email address is live and your address will be sold on again

Run a scan NOW, & change your email addy completely, (gmail can do you a free one easily)

Before you delete it take a screen shot/copy of your address book & then you can put all your contacts into your new email addy & send a round robin to all your contacts.

Agree with Matilda I have a gmail account for all online activities & buying & another for personal/financial stuff.

The first really gets clogged up with crap but as they have a very efficient SPAM filter after a very short while of you manually marking stuff as SPAM it all goes in directly.

Just chatted with someone who is knowledgeable about such things and they said the following:

Worth changing to a new email address if you don't mind doing this.

If you are near an Apple store, go on in and they ought to be able to help you.

Bear in mind that your email might not necessarily have been hacked. It is possible to send an email and put a different email address in the "from" box. But worth assuming that your account has been hacked and taking the action suggested above.

Hope it's resolved soon.

fuckwittery it's an apple account that a worker from the apple store set up for me on the phone when I bought it. He set up the email for me along with the account so I have no idea how to change the email/account/password.

Surely it's what the edit buttons for.
If you don't recognise them they go straight in the bin, unread. They get bored after a bit.

Usually this is caused by someone "borrowing" your email address. A simple change of password is all thats needed
