AIBU?

To think that a handbag should not cost $33,000 in the first place?

I know it's Oprah's own money. I know she tweeted to say, in any case it was overpriced and she would never have bought it. But I can't quite get out of my head the idea that there is some ridiculous shop in Switzerland where a handbag costs a year's income for a family.

Not a piece of craftsmanship furniture. Not diamonds. A handbag.

Am I a miserable, Marxist old bag? Is it just me that feels that this crosses the line, somehow?

No YANBU.
I feel the same about personalised number plates.

I think I'd quite like to have a Marxist bag!

Perhaps the $33k bag was hand plaited from the chest hair of the Dalai Lama?

Yes, yes nanny. Actually I feel the same about very expensive cars...

I feel the same about lots of things. It's obscene, when there are children dying of malnutrition. I think it about footballer's salaries, for example.

Completely agree. I find it inexplicable how anyone could think that was a reasonable amount to spend on something so trivial. But there we go, I'm not rich and I don't get how anyone can drool over something as dull as a bag anyway.

beastofburden Actually, there we differ. I would expect that, due to the engineering involved, that very expensive cars are a bit more worth their money.

However, the bit of tin on the end issued by the DMV, not so much.

YABU, it's all relative. I happily spend a grand on a bag so someone 33x richer than me might happily spend 33k

It's disgusting. Agree with Hassled - every word.

Many cars, Nanny, sure I would agree are good machines. But a small number come with incredibly silly price tags.

Number plates- there are petrol heads on my family who love them. My jaw just drops. You are so right.

Agree with hassled too, on football. Just do NOT get that one at all.

Akiss, wow. I have never spent a grand on a bag, much less happily. That's very interesting!

It would be the crocodile part that would creep me out. I wouldn't mind a bag that looked like a crocodile, but I would not want one that had actually been a crocodile.

I totally agree. Petra Ecclestone lives alone with her husband in a mansion worth around 52 million pounds. It seriously offends me when a Direct debit to Save the Children can make so much difference to a child.

In the words of Ghandi "There is enough for every man's need, but not for every man's greed."

Some people would find that cheap, I guess. I wouldn't. But some would.

Life and the world are unfair. This isn't news.

Yanbu, but it has only been highlighted about this expensive bag because of Oprahs experience. Victoria Beckham et al.all have these bags. What happened to Oprah in terms of how she was treated is the issue. And she was treated shockingly. But as a pp said it is relative to Oprahs wealth. Clearly there are many people able to afford such bags. Oprah is one of them but still she was treated with contempt in the shop. I don't know which is worse, such obvious racism or such massive wealth inequality in the world.

My head is reeling from the perspective

$33000 on a handbag is funny because I can't honestly imagine that amount of money therefor it does not exist and is a joke

£1000 on a handbag is shocking because I have seen and spent that and know the value of it it well budgeted

You have to ask yourself how much does this cost to make and is everyone in the supply chain paid fairly IMO

I just simply don't believe that people have got that rich without the exploitation of others or having completely inequitable company structures.

So I feel justified in loathing the uber rich and the trappings that go with it as they exploit others.

Not that they give a tiny turd Grin

Bearleft, I agree entirely about the racism. I started this as a separate thread from the racism one, to talk about the ridiculous price, because that shocked me too. That's not to take anything away from how wrong the racism was.

Obscene is exactly the word. I wonder how much of that the people making it receive?

It's only worth what the market will pay.
And the market for such a product is only the Very Rich. And who knows how much of a % of their wealth the Very Rich invest in our businesses or give to our charities.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I know beastofburden Smile. I think the large sums involved in these luxury items are difficult for an ordinary person to comprehend. It is mind boggling to think that anyone has that kind of disposable income.

I'm a fan of quality handbags such as Mulberry, but even their prices have become too obscene for me these days. £33k is just unreal, but if people are willing to buy it then good luck to them.

It's all relative isn't it, a person who buys it could give loads to charity. Literally millions. You have no idea really. Even with all the money in the world some places and people will remain very unequal.
