Pil both have a mobile for emergencies. Fil is a royal navy engineer and very clever so can just about work out how to use his after intensive instruction. Mil, on the other hand, has no idea. We have showed her at least 8/9 times how to answer/make calls but she still can't use it. We have also written easy instructions and stuck them on the back of her phone.
Anyway, mil has gone away for a week and every time we phoned, her phone was off. When we managed to contact her through the place she's staying she said "oh yes, I turned it off as it was annoying me". Angry
What the bloody hell is the point in her having a phone then!!!! AIBU to think that maybe she could try a little harder or just not bother with one? we haven't said this to her btw

Maybe she doesn't really want one? Why do you need to phone her all the time? Maybe she was enjoying having a break from everything.

When I go away on holiday I don't take a phone & I don't use the internet. Life can manage without me for a weeks or so.

Does she really need one? There was life before mobile phones.

I also hate it when some people expect everyone to have one. My ex employers whinged when I wouldn't give them my personal mobile number 'in case' they needed to contact me. They had my land line, that's good enough.

We needed to phone her about picking her up and stuff. It's not essential that she has one-I'd rather she didn't, seeing she gets in such a flap about it but she seems to want to have one!

Well then, it's her problem if she misses calls. Some people will never get the hang of technology no matter how much you try to help them. Good of you to try though Smile

Well then if you know she doesn't use it properly don't rely on it. You could have made the plans before age left surely?

My DM flatly refuses to have one. That's fine, although I live in a different town to her and try to ring her and find she doesn't answer the home phone. I end up ringing my DSis to check that DM is ok.

Your pil have mobiles for emergencies. So they can contact help if they need it.

Not so you can hound your poor mil when she's on holiday. And then get sneery about her use of technology.

What OldLadyKnows said.
She was on holiday. She didn't have an emergency. Therefore she had no need to turn the phone on.

If you are part of the arrangements for collecting at the end of the holiday, then you arrange all that before you go.
Can't see what your problem is.
