Shock I went to message someone who is selling soemthing on a sellling page...I always PM people on FB as I don't want everyone knowing what I'm considering purchasing.

Anyway...went to PM her and a thing came up saying it would cost 78 pence and if I wouldn't pay, then they would put it in her "other" box.

Shock

I wondered what "other" was for in your inbox! They've had this planned! how long before it will be 50p to upload pics?

But they didn't. You could have messaged her for free all you like, it just wouldn't have gone to the inbox meant for messages from her friends.

I haven't heard of this either but it's another reason for be to consider coming off there all together. Thing is, I am thinking if starting a business and was going to have a 'page' to promote it. I will probably need to check out the costs involved as I didn't even realise there might he a charge Sad.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 04/04/2013 00:13

Well yes....but that's fair enough...a business should pay to promote. But FB has been a social thing...we put up with ads and use it to keep in touch. When they start this crap, they'll lose a lot of people I think.

Yes, very true. I honestly didn't consider that there might be costs involved but your thread has made me realise I need to check it out in more detail. It's a crafty type business Blush so I've no idea if it will be profitable yet so night not be worth doing the Facebook page thing if the costs are too high.

78p to send a message?! Shock Seems a lot to me.

78p a message Shock. Could you comment instead on the sellers pic saying you've pm'd them so they will then check their 'others' box?

It's a 1$ charge I think. (They were testing $100 for certain members!)

Report
somedayma · 04/04/2013 00:28

that seems a very high amount! But to be fair, why shouldn't they profit from businesses?

Report
ThreadWorms · 04/04/2013 00:33

Oh, I'm not saying they shouldn't, just that I hadn't realised they were charging like this. I suppose it would be one thing to charge for having the page itself but if potential customers were then charged to send me messages then this could put then off making enquiries? I was just a bit surprised that they are doing this now.

I have seen the 'promoted' pages which I'm guessing they have been charged for but I hadn't considered there might be charges involved in a bog standard page.

Facebook is not my strong suit Threadworms but I seem to recall that communication about developments ain't their thing?

Why the fuck should it be free?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 04/04/2013 00:48

yes I just came across this. I think people will just have to get in the habit of checking the Other box, especially if they're selling things. The charge is for sending msgs to people who aren't on your friend list.

For now. Hmm

Too true cozie. They have made so many changes recently and not been transparent about it. I have wanted to close my account for a while now but only was waiting to see if I could utilise it for my business.

Caroldecker, my issue is that it's yet another change they've brought about without letting their users know about it. They can do what they like but ultimately it may put people off using it all together.

It's a business, not a public service. They can charge for what they want, and we, as consumers, can choose not to pay it and take our custom elsewhere. If people get too pissed off, they'll defect to other social networks.

I've never even noticed an 'other' box green.

I sent someone not on my friends list a pm and did not get charged and that was onky a couple of days ago.

Report
GreenEggsAndNichts · 04/04/2013 01:00

yes, I was only made aware of it via some comments on my FB wall last summer. I believe when they were implementing it, some msgs were sent there which weren't meant to go there, so there was a bit of spam to let people know it existed. I checked it at the time and I had a response from a DJ for a radio station I'd PM'd a month earlier!

How sad my life is. Grin

DS's poor excuse for a father sometimes messages me on FB. Considering that he won't pay child support, I doubt he will pay the charges to message me. He was abusive so I can't let him have my number and would certainly never have him on my friends list. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

Maybe it's just business type pages mamma?

Has it really been around for a year? Facebook is getting too complicated for me.
