Take his birthday money - he will not learn all the time you just keep replacing it. (But leave it for a week in case lost kit turns up!!)

depends who gave him the money tbh. if he decided to do the sensible thing and save it, it is harsh to take it off him- next time he will just spend it asap.

take it from pocket money or make him do stuff to pay you back

Make it clear it's up to him to look for it. I think there should be some financial recompence - is there any upcoming treat that will now not happen as the money has to go on new sports kit instead? Or maybe he has to pay half? Or go in wearing last year's too small shorts until it turns up, or is that too mean

But you possibly also need to acknowledge that school systems are not great. At DS school they have places to leave bags but they always look in such a mess I can well believe you COULD put your bag there and it not be there half an hour later.

Depends whether he has any sense of remorse or responsibility maybe?

Yes its unreasonable.....its not your money hence that is theft. ON other hand call school and tell him to MAKE him wear lost property and tell him that he can choose to replace his own kit if he doesnt want to wear it. :)......also check hes nont really being bullied and having stuff stolen.

Personally, I'd warn him that if it happens again I will take the money. I say this as a mother who after threatening this (to same aged DS) miraculously nothing has been lost. Oh and I pointed out there would be no mobile phone buying if he can't not lose PE kit. Grin

Tracy? Im not going to steal his money, but make him replace his own kit. At least it was swimming, not football boots and £25 shirt!

Does he constantly lose stuff through sheer carelessness? Only I wouldn't necessarily take money from him this time but I'd certainly warn that this was the last time I'd be prepared to replace casually discarded PE kits without a contribution.

I wouldn't do that personally.

Are you sure he has lost it and some other child hasn't "taken" it?

If you want to make a financial penalty, I would do what greenfolder suggests and take it out of future pocket money. Anything else does feel like theft to me.
