Her 8th birthday, so hopefully no H+S concerns. I used to love them, maybe can get away with them being 'retro', their topic is the 60s, think are probably more 70s, but haven't seen them at a child's party recently. Time to be revived?

I always do them for dd's parties (fooey to health and safety!) they have to be artfully arranged on a grapefruit wrapped in tin foil, looking like a 1970s Sputnik.

Mmmmmmm I love a porcupine. Will you get half a grapefruit covered in foil to poke the sticks in, then give it eyes made out of glace cherries? Go on...

Recently at a work social event, someone made a porcupine with cheese and pickled onions. This is very wrong. It should always be pineapple.

Cheese and pineapple, really?
No sausages?

Oh actually I think we had cheese and onion too, maybe I could do his'n'hers porcupines, not wanting to waste the other half of the grapefruit. Unfortunately no adults other than me, and maybe dh later, but that won't stop me! Glace cherries you say adds to shopping list under humous, that was never there in my day

id vote for little sausages on sticks first any day.

We're doing sausages separately. Do you think a mixture of cheese + onion and cheese + cornicion would work? To be fair will probably just be ds and I eating the cheese and onion, maybe do cornicion on their own, my dc will eat them all, they love them.

Onion and pineapple (boak, yes I know, my dc's are weird and eat these)
Sausage and pineapple
Sausage and cheese
Sausage and onion
Combo of all three (did I mention my dc's are weird)
Glace cherries with cheese, onion, pineapple combos.
Banana and/or strawberry dipped in chocolate (have cheated in the past and used nutella lol.) Marshmallows on own or with chocolate fruit.

I've introduced so many people to the joys of cheese and pineapple on sticks that I am now expected to take them to any 'event'- including any Xmas party at a hotel where they provide a buffet, on the grounds that 'no-one else does them right, Shodan'. Fortunately all hotels thus far have been remarkably understanding.

I consider my work well done Grin

Only if you're doing cheese and pickled onion ones too, and they are stuck in that tinfoil covered contraption that makes it look like a hedgehog.

We did it for dd2's 9th party and it was the most popular thing in the room. The only thing children were looking up and down the room to see if there was any more.

Yum :)

Also folded-up ham, red or black grapes (for colour), chunks of kiwi, chunks of cucumber on sticks.

Hope you all have fun.

What's all this health and safety malarkey? Confused I love me a good cheese and pineapple hedgehog. Please do the sticking it in the foil covered thingy though. My brother made them at Christmas but he didn't go the whole hedgehog which was marginally disappointing.

I used to have the "recipe" for these in my "Hamlyn Children's Cookbook" Grin

I think it was one recipe that did not instruct me to "now call an adult to turn the oven on"

3birthdaybunnies · 03/02/2013 19:36

How far in advance can I make them? Night before or on the day? Might as well ask as I have the sputnik world champions. (considering that it will just be me and 3yr old ds here 'helping' me on the day - going for after school at home party like the old days too, don't remember having any weekend parties when I was little)
