AIBU?

Bloody colds and lasting cough

Is it me or has anybody noticed that colds now seem to hang about, be more virulent little buggers and the cough lasts for WEEKS.

Had a cold in October and it just keeps rumbling on.

The cough is intense and usually leads to throwing up.

Been to GP who can't do out as its a virus. His cough lasted 10 weeks apparently.

We need some sun.. Aibu?

I have the dreaded cough, haven't had one for years. I know so many people who are poorly right now. It stinks.

I think with all the rain and dampness this year we are all getting trench rot from the inside out.

Hope you feel better soon.

Victorians recommended chocolate for coughs and toffees for sinuses if it helps?

DS has gone from one cold to another since about the start of September, the latest one resulted in a day at the hospital yesterday as he woke me at 3am having convulsions due to the rate his temperature had risen-though we didn't know this at the time & the whole episode was terrifying Sad

Not just me then which is kind of reassuring but sorry for all the above.

Agree with you cheeky it's the bloody damp. Will try your Victorian advice.

Roll on some sun!!

Barred, yes we had the same with our ds years ago. Even as a nurse I found it very frightening as his temp rose so fast I hadn't realised.

Hope he gets better soon.

BTW I always find a hot toddy is good for coughs & colds of the adult variety Wink

Yanbu. I've been ill since the middle of Nov with bouts of excessive phlegm, coughing, sinusitis, tonsilitis, swollen windpipe and earache. Had norovirus too. Poor DD has been suffering on and off too, but seems to recover quicker than me.

My DH said last night that he has had enough of my hacking up phlegm Hmm - I've had enough! I'm the one suffering!

If it's any help, I have always tended to get long-lasting coughs out of any virus I have ever had, and I have found Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam works best. It's a cough suppressant, so gives you a bit of a rest from that rib-jerking, vomit-inducing racking cough. Enough that I don't wake myself in the middle of the night coughing (and having to dash to the loo because vomiting is quite likely).

It's not the on-the-shelf version of Covonia, they're no different to any other 'cough bottle', but the stuff they keep behind the counter. No prescription required, just the usual is-it-for-yourself, have-you-used-it-before questions. Only downside is that it's not for the under-12s.

I agree they are horrible this year. Both dd and ds2 (4 and 9 months) got the noro over october half term and then a cold straight after. Dd got over hers the week before Christmas, ds2 still has his. Just before Christmas he had some steroids as he was wheezing but the poor baby is still rattling and at night he is made of superglue and can't be put down at all.

Same here - DD and I had one cold after another all of last term. I'm making sure we both rest as much as possible these holidays, as we were shattered by the end of term, and the flus and stomach bugs haven't hit yet!

Coughs last for weeks? Not in my world! My coughs last a good 3-4 months and die off as spring starts.

I had this and couldn't shake it so went to the doctor. He prescribed codine and linctus, which shifted it in about 3 days. He also suggested gargling with salt water to help shift the snot out of my throat.

I've had a cough since the end of August - it just doesn't wanna go!
Every time it seems like its almost ending, along comes another cold & it starts over again Hmm
Roll on the summer!

i've had a cough and cold since october. or rather, a cough and a series of colds. i use public transport and so sit in germ soup to and from work, four hours a fucking day.

i'm ill. in the second week of my holiday and i'm still ill. my fucking line manager thinks i've been pretending to be ill. i'm ill. ill. and i've had enough!

i'm taking hot lemon and vitamin pills.

my nose is blocked, my head always aches, i can't breathe properly and i'm coughing. its cold. its damp. and its bad for my health!

We've got it here too. I've had a cold and cough for two weeks and it is showing no signs of disappearing.

Poor DS1 missed nearly two weeks of school, went back to school for the last week of term and seemed to be better - but then he has been coughing again the last two days, a really deep but also tickly one.

We were worst last year, we all caught a cold/virus thing at the beginning of October and we didn't fully shake it until the end of January. Really hoping this one goes away sooner!

Take Zinc.

It really does work.

I normally have really bad colds in the winter. This year, since taking zinc, I've had none - even though my dd has had some terrible ones.

it sucks. my baby and toddler had it for 2 weeks at the end of last month. they finally got rid of it for about a week and then picked it up again a few days before Christmas. DS1 is already skinny and there's not a lot left of him after losing his appetite again!

DS2 scared me something awful with a massive coughing fit yesterday morning. he's also been a bit of a superglue baby and up even more than usual at night.

go away colds!

chandellina · 30/12/2012 21:36

I've had it for about three weeks. I think it's going but the only thing that helped was codeine.

I've had a cough for 2 months. Coughing up green shit every morning. Not fun. It seems to get better for a week or so, then it comes back with a vengeance. Can't get a doctors appointment and don't have the time to go sit in the walk-in all bloody day so I'm just living with it.
