To wonder how the farking 'ell you "just squirt a bit of breastmilk" up a baby's nostrils

DS (12 weeks) is currently a bit snotty and grumpy. Googling for advice turned up, amongst other things wot I have not got to hand, the suggestion that you "just squirt a bit of breastmilk up there". Apparently the healing powers of breastmilk are also a miracle snot cure.

Except that either my nipples are woefully inadequate on the breastmilk aiming front, or other babies have ludicrously large nostrils, or something.

Now I have a tearful, extremely cross little baby who thinks I am trying to kill him with my boobs. Where am I going wrong?

Try expressing a little bit into a cup, soak a cotton wool ball and gently wipe/squeeze around his nose...

Also works wonders for sticky eyes, gammy umbilical stumps, heck, it could probably cure the plague or summat...

Put some in a 1 or 2 ml syringe and squirt it down (slowly!)- it doesn't get cold like saline. I found mine didn't cry when I did it but they did with saline.

I also really recommend one of those nasal aspirators that you suck the snot out of their noses with - not the kind with the bulb cos they are rubbish, but the kind with a chamber you hold to their nose, and a tube you suck through - sounds gross, but there is a filter, so no chance of accidentally getting a mouthful of snot

I had to try very hard NOT to spray milk up DD's nose! I'd never thought of it as being a good thing!

Why, why would breast milk cure these things? Ive heard it before but have so far resisted putting my nipple anywhere bar DD2s mouth

Express and wipe with cotton wool or drip up nose off a spoon or similar. It does work

Only tried it on DD's sticky eye, it was so much easier than boiling water, cooling it, finding clean cotton wool etc. no idea if it worked better than water, but it worked. Good enough for me.

Guess God knew mums need to multi task so provided a multi action product for us [grn]

He doesn't sound as snuffly now as he did earlier, so I guess some of it must have got to the right place. Bit surprised it seems to have worked, tbh!

What on earth is in breast milk to make it such a panacea?!

My boobs were so ridiculously leaky, I probably squirted milk up the nostrils of passers by without realising. I may have cured many colds.

I have often pondered this, is it just human breast milk that is so curing of random ailments if so then why?

For some things breastmilk (or any milk live from a mammal) is good because it is a living product with antibacterial properties - eg. for sticky eyes or minor infections.

I doubt breastmilk is any better for snotty noses than pasteurised milk or warm water though.

Maybe I should try it on myself next time I get a cold. Left nostril breastmilk, right nostril cow.

OTOH, we usually only have soymilk in (& I can't be arsed to go get milk in just for the purpose of squirting up my nose), and somehow I don't think soyamilk is quite the same. Also it might turn into tofu.

Yanbu after 5 babies i have still never managed to squirt milk anywhere let alone up a nostril. As soon as they stop sucking the milk stops coming out. If i try to squeeze it out i might get a small drible but nothing squirt like.

I have not tried to put bm up ds' nose - I stuck with the saline spray - it is fab :)
