to wonder if i am spending too much time online? and to ask how much time others spend online?

since sunday i have been making a note of how long i have spent online (basically consisting of fb / mumsnet, ebay, and general random surfing in that order - ie nothing at all productive Blush )

and i spent 3 hours in total on it on sunday, and 2 hours 10 minutes on it yesterday Shock that seems a LOT to me, and bear in mind because I knew I was "monitoring" myself IYSWIM i probably went on a LOT less than usual, and yesterday I was working half the day (outside of the home)....and am now a bit worried tbh as it can't be healthy surely? or in this day and age am i worrying about nothing?

can i ask how much time do others spend online? and does anyone want to join me in trying to cut it down? obviously if you work at a laptop / pc then that is different, i mean just general messing about on the internet.

You can NEVER spend too much time online (unless you are working and are not on Mumsnet Grin)

Mumsnet is the only 'time wasting' site I visit and I definitely don't usually spend 2-3 hours a day on here although if I find an interesting and long thread, it can be that long, but that doesn't happen everyday. I don't usually get that much free time to myself in a day.

The rest of my time of the net is useful rather than pottering (banking, shopping, looking up answers to questions the kids ask me...)

I live online ....literally! I work via the internet so I don't even get to meet my clients....I shop on the internet and bloody socialise on it too! I'm planning on joining some classes that I will enjoy like cake decorating etc...just so I don't turn into a big brain with fingers.

I'm kind of worried. Just not sure how I can make real life more appealing at the moment!

I'm kind of worried to if I really think about it.
f p of tea before I start the day.
I MN/FB in my breaks and any spare time like now waiting till 3 before school run.
I MN when I get home even if I'm not sat down in front of computer/on iPod it's there after I have finished doing whatever I need to do, cooking dinner/washing up/ tidying up.
I MN in bed before I go to sleep to. I used to read all this time until I found MN I even go on it when my friends are round or I'm out. I use it for knowing whats going on in the news, for people to talk to, ideas to implement. I would get withdrawal symptons if it went away.

My second line should say, I MN/FB before I get out of bed and while I wake up with my tea in the morning.

Yeah thats what i used to do inneedof

i try and leave it as long as possible between waking up and logging on now - managed 45 mins this morning Blush

yesterday did not go well, i ended up on for 3 1/2 hours in total Shock ...although also cleaned the house from top to bottom and did 2 lots of washing. as well as all the usual stuff like school runs, cooking etc, so does that make it a bit better :o

I'm not sure exactly but it is too much. I have tried many, many times to cut down. Sometimes successfully for a while. When I do seriously cut down I find that I am less stressed, get a lot more done and I am overall happier and so is my family. It is an easy thing to do when I'm a bit tired and then it becomes an addictive habit!
I work during the school day - so it is 20+ minutes before school and then typically about 2+ hours during the evening and then during the day as well during school holidays/weekends. It's not good. I work about 30-35 hrs in a typical week, have no childcare (apart from the bits DH does around his FT work schedule as I am a PT teacher) and a fairly large house to keep clean too - all of this easily manageable but somehow, at times, I manage to make it stressful by also fitting in my internet habit! How silly! Yes, this thread is just what I needed to see. I will join you in cutting down, again!

Glad to hear others are struggling with MN addiction like me...
Moomie, 45mins, well done, I've started putting my laptop on before I get in the shower so it's ready for me to read am I being unreasonable the news while I get dressed Blush

I have a boring job and a colleague who likes to steal all my work so I spend most of my day online doing non-work related things disguised as work. I shuffle lots of tabs around so I can hide the interesting non-work ones behind email etc.

I log on in this order:
BBC news (and this stays on all day)
Skype
Hotmail
Work email
My mum's blog
MN
FB
EChinacities (forum for expats in China like me)
Sporcle (quizzes for bored people like me)

In total about 8 hrs at work plus 40 mins in the morning plus 1-2 hrs at night = almost 11 hrs daily!

Shock

Moomie the more I think about it the worse it's sounding to me.

I think I might stop MNing till after 8pm every day. I would manage to catch up on my house work and talk to my dc instead of being on here. I make myself grumpy and tired by staying up to late MNing and then can't get up in the morning. Thankyou for this thread I needed a wake up call.

god inneedof i feel like that too re the dcs :(

how old are your dc, mine are 6 and 3, and i feel dead guilty wondering if i don't talk to them enough, but sometimes its boring and draining, i would just rather sit on the pc talking to no one apart from mners and fb friends Blush

dd is 7 just after christmas and ds is 5. I to get bored and drained and can't be bothered to listen to them. I make them do loads of homework with reading and writing just so I can MN after school.

I have started making us all sit up to the table again and asking them random questions like what animal would you not eat eg snake zebra ect. Makes me feel better but I still miss MN while doing it.

Sometimes I reward myself like if I cook a roast and let them bake cakes then they can go play in their bedroom for a hour or so and leave me alone to MN. I take them to soft play quite a lot just so they again leave me alone to MN on the free wifi. Even now I'm not at work today, I have loads of house work to do, beds need making, breakfast dishes to do, beds haven't been made yet but I'm faffing about on here argh.
