t.co/qBbyLxIb found this symbol on back of my wine bottle. Never seen any like it before but maybe I have missed a few things as it has been 4 years since I was last pregnant. Can't help feeling patronized by a wine bottle. Anyway is that how it is now blanket ban for drinking while pregnant?

There is not a blanket ban, just like there is not a ban on smoking while pregnant, that doesn't mean it is a good idea though. Alcohol companies are having to be more responsible about health warnings as tobacco companies have had to be for a long time. Don't know why you would feel patronised by it Do you feel patronised when advised not to drink and drive?
It's your body/baby, if you want to have a glass of wine, cigarette whatever, feel free but the companies who sell them have a responsibility to point out the risks.

Just realised this reads like I am pregnant - I am not btw, just posting from phone that is playing up! I feel patronised because a pic showi.g an outline of a pregnant woman w/out any explaination is not helpful adults can decide what they drink. There is no picture of a child with a line through it or an alcoholic they ate at risk when drinking what about someone driving a car? Just seems very odd and yes patronising to single out a preg woman for this treatment. Wine is v nice though.

Don't think I could muster a feeling of being patronised. Some people drink while pregnant, some don't, some drink too much and maybe a reminder like that will make someone think twice.

My local train station has a reminder not to wander off the platform onto the track and get run over by a train - as if!

I think it is mandatory in France and is voluntary over here, not sure but think Germany might have them too. There is warnings on some drinks about safe limits and it is illegal to sell alcohol to children so I suppose they think they are covered that way.
I get what you mean about no actual information given but I think they are going for a quick visual guide rather than loads of words which people wouldn't really read.
Personally I am not sure of the effectiveness of health warnings on the products, I think that if you have got the length of buying it then you are going to use it but I do think if it is the start of a more responsible drinks industry then that's a good thing.

Sadly its becoming more common on stuff over here. Apparently pregnant women are incapable of making decisions for themselves so we need these little reminders just in case we think having a life whilst pregnant is allowed.

Actually it's a bloody stupid sign. She looks very pregnant. So, in the last trimester, when it is the least damaging and dangerous to drink. If she was pregnant but not showing, that would be the worst. So, not just patronising, but inaccurate.

When I was preggo I avoided wine, unpasteurised cheese, runny eggs, shellfish.

My French SIL was up duff at same time and ate/drank all of the above.

Both babies (huge children now) were fine.



But never seen or noticed this on a wine bottle. I agree it's a bit ridic.

It's because women, especially pregnant ones are too stupid to be able to read, in fact it's indecent and immoral for women to know how to read, so they need pictures to tell them what to do or not to do, just in case they are out somewhere without a male owner...

Rogers - they wouldn't sell me Olbas Oil because I was breastfeeding (a 1 year-old! So not even that much milk!) - they go overboard.

I have read soooo many studies, and feel totally fine about drinking when pregnant (not getting fall-down drunk, but a glass of wine with dinner/similar). First 3 months I take it very easy (but didn't want booze anyhow), after that I had it if I wanted it (and midwife positively encouraged it at the end - not that they know everything)

Personally, it just makes me want to take a pic whilst in the same pose.

I always feel a bit guilty when I see that symbol while enjoying a (small, infrequent) glass of booze.

Yanbu. I went to a BBQ when I was pg, and made the informed choice to have ONE BEER. However there was this pic on the back and the host looked a bit at me deciding to have one after seeing it. I had to explain that actually 1-2 units once or twice a week was NOT going to result in fetal alcohol syndrome...

I went out and had a glass of wine on my birthday when I was past my due date (thanks DD, who held on until the last minute). The waiter looked sideways at me and asked the barman (whispered conversation). Thankfully the barman knows me and is sensible and laughed at him. I think I heard the phrase, "maybe if it was a bottle of wine". I imagine it didn't occur to the waiter that DD was all made by that point.

I was once refused service in a pub when I had a large bump I wouldn't care but the only alcohol in the order was a pint for DH, the rest was all soft drinks for me and the children. We had the last laugh though because when the snotty landlord eventually gave DH his pint, (personally into his hand, so the little pregnant wifey couldn't quaff en route back to the table or something ) DH told him to add the exorbitant cost of the round onto the bill for the food we'd ordered, and when we got the card statement next month, they'd forgotten serve the miserable bugger bloody well right, quite put a damper on the first night of our long awaited holiday.
