AIBU?

To think onions are evil?

They are the Devil's food.

They contaminate everything they touch, are so overpowering, stay on peoples' breath for ages, are in everything preprepared (sauces etc.) and in every meal served in cafes/restaurants.

I can't escape!

I know where my onion-hatred came from; my Dad. He genuinely eats raw onions like apples. He would always leave half-eaten raw onions in the fridge when I was growing up (he still does but that's no longer my problem Smile ) and EVERYTHING in the fridge would taste of onions. Cornflakes with onion milk, peach melba and onion yoghurt, toast with onion butter...

Cooked onions are less offensive than raw but they're still 'orrid. Slimy, smelly bastards. They make you cry FGS; how can that be good?

I hate onions. AIBU?

YABVU. It's mushrooms that you have to worry about. They'll end up taking over the world some day. Onions, OTOH, are lovely and I eat them in just about anything that is an appropriate setting for an onion.

Love onions, but my DH would probably agree with you. :)

I love mushrooms. And onions. In fact, one of my best breakfasts is sauteed onions and mushrooms with garlic and basil. On wholewheat toast.

As a child I had a warty fat old babysitter who used to eat raw onion and ketchup sandwiches and would try and feed them to us.

Boke.

(Still love them though)

I love onions. But I have an irrational fear of another vegetable, so I can't condemn anyone for disliking onions!

I have rarely been more outraged by a statement in my LIFE. All good savoury foods start with an onion.

If I ever see you around dissing that particular member of the allium family again YouMakeMeWannaLaLa there will be trouble.

Squoosh I'll let you have garlic and, at a push, leeks, but DOWN WITH ONIONS.

Once you add an onion to something all you can taste is onions.

I can tell if my H has had onions in the last 48 hours before he even enters the room. And working with an onion-muncher is bleurgh!

Sorry freerange I Love mushrooms Blush they are inoffensive! But I would give up my mushrooms if the world would give up onions. They make you cry and sound like 'bunions'. They gotta go!

C'mon degutastic what scares you? swede?

It's peas that are the enemy. They change into mushy, processed, fresh and canned. You have to be alert. And they are teeny weeny and roll after you to attack you.

I will have to disagree and say that in fact it is parsnips that are the work of the devil.

Especially roasted and cut to look like roast potatoes like the prostitutes in LA Confidential.

I'm with you OP! i dislike onions too. Pretty much every recipe has them in though so I can avoid them when I cook from scratch myself but have to put up with them if someone else cooks. A good reason to cook everything fresh myself!

I'm annoyed with onions today because we had (shop bought, aren't I just fucking awful) steak pie for dinner which had huge lumps of the greeny white liney fuckers in it. I didn't want steak and onion pie, just steak pie. Why call it steak pie and sneakily put giant bits of onion in it like a lying bastard vegetable ninja? AIBU??

Sorry OP.

Peas used to be nice when I was little, but I haven't had a nice pea for a while! And I like to eat all of one thing before I start the next thing on the plate; peas mess up this system by hiding under other things!

While I like parsnips uoYekor I with you on the whole vegetable diguise subtefuge thing. My parents used to smuggle veg in my mashed potato. Can you guess what was their favourite? That's right ONIONS in the mash! Vom! Dad even does baked onions as part of Xmas dinner. So everything that was cooking in the oven at the same time tastes oniony. Xmas dinner ruined!

musicmadness Yes, they're in every recipe! But onions can also be nasty by-proxy. My gran knew I hated onions, so she decided instead of giving me some of the casserole she'd made, she'd give me....baked beans! WTF. That's the onions' revenge; making sure the alternative to their strong, slimy nastiness is baked, fricking beans.

Youmakemewanna, all I'm saying is that the evil ones are the cousins of the much lovelier cucumber...

Baked beans are not a valid substitute for casserole [sceptical]

Not courgettes? Or is it gherkins?

At least they can be avoided, I spose. Unless you have the misfortune to live with my old uni flatmate who loved to mix raw onion, gherkins and vinegar in a bowl and leave in the fridge for weeks for her to pick at. I moved out when I realised my wine had taken on an oniony/gherkin flavour.

Now I really want to know what a [sceptical] emoticon would look like. It'd be bloody handy for using on bridge dwellers. Where's TalcnTurnips when you need her?

Talking if evil veg, what is it with cauliflower and sprouts? I mean, if it smells like farts while it's cooking, it sure isn't going to be any nicer when it is on the way out, is it? And people keep polluting perfectly good macaroni cheese dishes by including cauliflower in it.

And as for being MADE to eat sprouts...just . I don't give a figgy pudding if it's 'traditional' at Christmas, sod off with your sprouts or I'll find somewhere unpleasant to stuff them...

The onion is the Queen of the kitchen. You should all genuflect before her.

Peas are her ladies in waitings and mushrooms are her courtiers.

YouMakeMeWannaLaLa · 10/10/2012 23:33

Yes, cauliflower! What the hell IS it? Just plasticky white shite. Surely is cannot have any goodness in it? And sprouts are an abomination!

But...at least if a sprout touches a perfectly delicious roast potato, you can still eat the roast...if an ONION touches anything else it is contaminated with dirty filthy onion juice and will be chucked to the hens who then produce onion flavoured eggs .
