AIBU?

Car buffs - please explain this to me!

I just don't get it at all!

We are sitting in the car on a motorway - doesn't much matter which. It is freezing cold, the rain is pelting down and the air conditioning is working full pelt (just setting the scene, you understand).

Suddenly, DH winds down the electric windows. An arctic blast from the Great Outdoors rushes through the car and, as we sit there shivering, a Ferrari/Porsche/Lamborghini/Lotus/Whatever roars past.

DH shuts the windows and breathes reverently: "Did you hear that?"

AIBU to be totally baffled by this behaviour? I mean: it's a car. It has 4 wheels and gets the owner from A to B without breaking down (well, ok, maybe not the Lotus Smile).

Not as baffled as I am by someone using the air conditioning when they're already freezing cold?

My husband suddenly jumped off the couch from horizontal snoozing last night and raced out into the front garden....

why?

because he had heard a car go past, (we live on a long cul de sac) and having heard it a few times before, was desperate to see what car it was...

Maserati apparently... Hmm

Some car engines sound good. DP does this too.

Switched to hot, Worra - doesn't yours blow hot air, too?

As Worra says, I'm a bit baffled by the A/C on when it's freezing out (unless you also had the heat on but were ensuring the windows didn't mist up). I too would be baffled, so YANBU.

DD1 is like your DH, loves the sound of a car roaring past and can't help herself from winding down the window if she's stopped at traffic lights and a Porsche/Ferrari/Aston Martin/something with a V-whatever engine/Harley Davidson pulls up along side so she can hear them accelerate away when the lights change. She loves the sound of them and is a proper petrol head.

Oh right no

I don't have a car or a microwave Blush

In my day we called it the heater

'I too would be baffled by the behaviour' is what I meant to say there Hmm

Yeah I can explain it.

You married a nerd.

Sorry.

bogeyface · 08/05/2012 00:19

:o Mine too Worra! I still call it that and because both of my cars are crap, it usually takes until I get to wherever I am going before it heats up!

I tell you what I hate, people without microwaves who complain about not being able to soften things in them, that really pisses me off.

Tanith · 08/05/2012 00:20

It might be a heater. It blows hot air when it's switched to hot and cold air when it's switched to cold. Blush

....he drove was a fucking honda civic Hmm

Boys like the sound of engines. Generally anything bigger than a 4 cylinder sounds fantastic. Our two year old boy is fascinated by the sound of motor bikes. It's a natural instinct as we haven't taught him this. The throaty growl of a performance engine makes a guy tingle as much as a new pair of shoes does it for a woman. As far as Lotuses go, they are fantastic (we owned one for a while) but they don't sound as good as something with a v-8.

Sorry but I have done the same Blush

I drive a Lotus.

If the bloody window still worked I'd be tempted to wind it down too.

I do this and I'm not a bloke.... I love fast cars, wish I could afford to drive one.

I drive a Lotus Grin I have changed the exhaust so that it sounds even louder and deeper!

DH and I also open the windows and turn down the radio to listen to the sound of nice cars, you can't beat the sound of a Ferrari! [fully aware I am a car nerd]

Haha Mr. Gin! What do you have?

My Astra VXR sounds pretty good. The boy always says "Dad blue car vroom vroom!" when we go for a ride.

I do it too. You can physical feel the sound of a great engine sometimes. :)

I would love a Masserati. I WILL get one when I don't have to ferry the dcs anymore. :)

The best way to hear that roar is in a tunnel. If you are stuck on a M-way then there was nothing else your DH could do but wind the window down and at least get some of the feel from that beauty. But, really, you should be going through tunnels on a regular basis to get a real thrill.

An beautiful S1 Elise. It's my perfect car. Light weight, totally manual, decent fuel economy sort of , cheep running costs sort of, and rather nippy.

DD loves it. ' faster daddy, faster !'

I don't of course go silly speeds with dd in it.

Oh the roar of a throbbing engine! Grin

I think it sounds refreshingly normal. Instead of having a mid life crisis and buying a Porsche for me to take to Sainsburys my DH got himself a GWiz Sad and photovoltaic panels for the roof. Nerdy, you don't know what nerdy is Grin

Report
wildfig · 08/05/2012 09:24

That's normal. In our car the windows are buzzed down and a lecture is delivered about how you can tell whether the car approaching is an American or a British V8 from the different firing order.
