AIBU?

to think that dogs should be kept on leads in parks? Or at least properly supervised?

So today I was out with some friends and DD and DS in our local park. There was a dog - collie crossed with something else I reckon - bounding around unaccompanied in the park and diving in and out of the playground area from which dogs are banned. I was a bit Hmm as it was very busy with lots of small children around and I have never seen anyone just leaving their dog there like that before.

A bit later, as we walked past the tennis courts, we noticed a mum with her three kids freaking out because this dog had cornered her son (6yo-ish) and was growling and barking at him. She was trying to get her scared son to walk to her and her DDs and every time he moved the dog would get a bit closer and stop the kid from moving. The dog was obviously getting scared and excited too and my friend very bravely went and caught it by the collar and calmed it down enough for us to have a look at its tag and phone the number that was on it.

It turned out that the owner was in the playground around the corner with her kids and was very blase about her dog having been running around and bothering people and told us to just let him go again. Shock The woman with the kids in the tennis courts was really upset by now - it was her having the phone conversation - so I took the dog and marched down to where we could see the owner and told her that I was absolutely not going to just let him go.

She got really angry with me and told me that I was "ruining her day" so I pointed out that that her dog had ruined the day of the little boy playing tennis and how did she know that the dog wasn't crapping everywhere while she wasn't looking. She then told me that it's a very safe dog and that she's got two kids of her own, but imo there's no such thing as a "safe" dog when they're stressed and scared and unaccompanied. I asked her why she couldn't just put the dog on a lead while her kids were in the playground - which is what most people do, and tie them to the fence - and she said that "he doesn't go on a lead" Hmm She then left her toddlers unaccompanied in the playground to go and put the dog in the car Shock and asked me if I thought that made her an irresponsible mother as well (and I said yes, which was horrible of me, I know).

I told her that she was irresponsible and horrible and rude and that she shouldn't have a dog if she wasn't able to control it. I might have been just a bit fucking furious by this point.Blush I also told her that if I saw it unaccompanied and annoying children in the park again then I would call the police which, I admit, was maybe just a bit OTT Blush Blush

So I know I over reacted but who was most U, me or her?!

You did the right thing!

I think tbh I would have just taken the dog to the nearest police station and have them sort it.

Very unresponsible on her part!

I am a dog owner. I adore dogs.

YANBU. This woman is an appalling example of a dog owner & gives the rest of us a bad name.

My dog goes off lead. But had bloody good recall. And I would never let her off lead in a playground where she was not allowe or out of my sight. I would let her off in a general park however. But like I say, I have trained her to recall.

With an unfenced play area the dog should be on the lead or within sight at all times. But all the parks round here have fenced play areas and I'd let my dog off in certain areas where it was permitted to do so.

YANBU I have two small dogs who are rarely off the lead. While they have been on leads they have both been attacked and bitten by other dogs. It makes my blood boil. They first thing the owners say is: ''He's never done that before!"

They should not be off in a children's play area.

YANBU! As a dog lover, I would never allow ny dog to be outwith my vision, especially in a busy park. Apart from what your dog might be doing to upset others, what might they be doing to your dog? And you have no right to reply, as you weren't there, didn't witness anything. Madness. She sounds like the kind of dog owner that gives the rest of us a bad name. I will be very surprised if anyone can muster a reason why YABU! Angry

If you contact the local police they can go round to the person's house and insist they keep it on a lead. Happened to a friend who had an unfounded complaint againat her dog. Police admitted the other person was a multiple complainer, but they still had to do this. Confused

We had this yesterday in a local beauty spot. Me and a friend with her 5yr old DS, walking kicking a ball. A woman was coming towards us with one dog on a lead and two running free.

O e of her dogs chased the little boy, wanting to play with the ball, the little boy was scared and ran to his mam, the dog ran at him and jumped up.

My friend told the woman off for having a dog off the lead and she said, he shoukdn't have run. Anyway, my friend raised his trouser leg and he'd been nipped! So we followed her back to the car, took her registration and DF phoned the cops to report her. She didn't want the dog destroyed, but wanted the woman to understand the consequences of letting her dogs run free when she couldn't control them. Sad

It's really good to know that the police will do something if you contact them. I wouldn't normally threaten something like that but I was just so bloody Angry!

You should contact the council animal warden explain what has happened and they will go round and give her a telling off and advice. One of my friends was banned from a local park here because her dog was a pita & no matter how we tried to tell her she wouldn't sort him out. We all refused to walk with her & she was reported. She now walks him muzzled and on a lead & has to drive to another park

I have 2 dogs and YANBU. 1 of my dogs is very unpredicatable and I dont trust him round strangers so he is NEVER let off his lead, he has quite a long lead but is reigned in if we are near people, Dog 2 is lovely and soft but would be in the next county if we let him off so he is never let off either.

I would have done the same. Some really irresponsible dog owners out there.

I am dog mad but I am incredibly careful when walking my dog because she is huge and that can be scarey for children and adults alike if she approaches them when they are unaware.

You are absolutely right OP, dogs ought not to be off their leads in play areas, it is ridiculous to argue otherwise.

Btw we frequently meet unaccompanied dogs in the country park where we walk our dog. To our astonishment when we manage to catch them to try to stop them running into the adjacent road and call the number on their tag we find that, almost invariably, they are non plussed and blase about it. Ridiculous and irresponsible behaviour showing very little concern for others or their dog.

YANBU. good on you.

Another dog lover here who inexplicably has one child who is petrified of animals and another who would put his head in a lion's jaws.
Petrified used to be just nervous but after many, many dog-off-lead-oh-he-doesn't-bite incidents she is petrified Angry

There are some super dog owners around but as far as I'm concerned if the dog won't come if it has spotted another dog or child with fun ball then it should be on a lead.

YANBU.

DD had her buggy knocked over whilst she was sitting in it by an old English Sheepdog which was the size of a small horse, (and trying to hump my Springer puppy), whilst she tried to call it back in the most pathetic manner I have ever been sorry enough to witness.

My pup was on the lead, but the sheepdog wasn't. I was furious, and reported her to the police, who took it very seriously.

Reporting out of control dogs to the police is not OTT imo, and the police won't think it is either, especially in a situation where a) they shouldn't be there and b) there are a lot of children around.

You didn't call the police on this woman about the unsupervised dog terroizing small children?! Dogs are meant to be under control. Unfortunately, that does not mean on a lead. yet.

YANBU

I have a dog who can be quite protective of me and DC if other dogs come near. He doesn't bite but he likes to warn the other dog away. He's always on a lead around people and other dogs. If he's off lead and I spot someone he is put straight back on the lead. I hate it when other dogs bound over to him and the owner casually shouts 'oh don't worry he only wants to play' or 'she doesn't bite'. I do not take him in to play areas as they are for children to play not dogs. It drives me mad when people have their dogs off lead in a child's play area.

Saves me typing the same thing - my dog walks to heel and comes back with 1 clap of my hands didn't stop some idiot shouting at me about her though.

I don't really like dogs, but if well controlled (and shit picked up as it happens) I don't care if the dogs are on or off lead.
but unfortunately some dog owners underestimate their ability to train their dogs and grossly overestimate the cuteness of their stinking pets.

I hate dogs (sorry!) I know others like them but I think they are a danger in situations like this and would like to see some kind of authority that could be much tougher on people like this.

Dog owner and young children owner here, YANBU people like that give us dog owners a bad name.My dog is very child friendly but when he comes to the park with us he stays on his lead because I appreciate not everyone sees him in the same light as we do.The park also specifies that dogs should be on leads.I have seen dogs running riot in the baby area of the park and owners not giving a damn. I have also had off lead dogs bothering my boy, again the owners do not give a damn.Thankfully the local wardens have started to patrol our local park due to the scale of the problem.

I think it will happen that dogs will have to be on leads in public places and it will be the fault of idiots like this owner.

YADNBU and I wish I had been more challenging to the daft woman who laughed when her bloody pet peed into my daughters brand new shoes on a beach.
