Would you have appreciated the same comment, OP? Taken it on the chin in good humour?

Apologise...

You said it at the table in front of everyone?

He may have over reacted a little but you insulted him in front of everyone. If he did the same to you would you appreciate it? Would you be able to put yourself in his shoes and find the comment scathing?

Please apolgise. Don't let something silly ruin your relationship as like a previous poster said, Christmas brings out the best/worst in us all.

He's way over reacted! I'd apologise just to keep the peace (I'm like that) but think he sounds as if he needs to grow up. Are you sure it wasn't something else unrelated he was upset about?

If all she says is "What's with the beard?" then that is hardly an insult. He seems to have massively over-reacted and behaved like an idiot.

If he had said it to her however.... Wink

Maybe he had to grow it to cover really bad acne and is embarrassed? Hmm

Can't see why that is offensive. Is he just over sensitive?

He sounds like a brat (unless he's a pre-op transsexual who spends hours on hair removal, in which case it was rather rude of you to draw attention to his furry face?)

Otherwise, his dinner would be in the dog.

ImperialBlether - you have no idea what the backstory is here: how OP honestly intended the remark, how it came across, how she and her brother usually get on, how much alcohol was involved, etc. Family niggles usually get magnified over Christmas - I know my brother and I make each other murderous if forced to be in the same room at this time of year, and we're probably both equally to blame. I certainly wouldn't be calling the OP's brother an "idiot" based on this scanty information.

"What's with the beard?" is phrased as if you think the beard looks bad. Apologise even if you didn't mean it to come out as an insult.

I mean "I HATE my fecking siblings. ARRGGGHHH" hardly speaks of a usually tranquil family environment, does it?

The usual "it is his fault" comments

sounds like this is a regular thing from the OP.

little digs and jibes mount up maybe he has had enough and has gone somewhere not to spoil everyone elses christmas like his has just been spoilt.

FYI

I am projecting.

And no one thinks that the OP is over-reacting to a Christmas sibling squabble by squealing I-never-ever-ever-want-to-see-my-eldest-brother-again-EVER?

You sound like soap opera stars, the pair of you. Or brattish teenagers.
Has he gone home yet? Do you live in the same house?
Are your parents sighing and rolling their eyes at your arrested development, or are they used to the pair of you?
Ridiculous. Xmas Grin

Was just a rant. I went and cried upstairs for a bit. Came down, told him to stand up and we hugged. Then i told him his present was a razor. We've all laughed and exchanged pressies. There are 4 siblings and their 5 kids. Big bro sat at the table saying i dont like children, i dont want to sitnext to children. Errr ishoooos?
History? Geez! Brought up with 7 siblings, six of whom brothers, who would happily banter with me and take the piss. My comment WAS just banter, i expected a witty come back, not a massive hissy fit. We are at Mums, who always likes doing the xmas dinner. I'm exhausted after working till 3pm on xmas eve, had to deal with XH for 2 days, very hard work through december. Alls calm now. Blush
