I can see why you hate nights. I had he misfortune of calling the labour ward last night and the midwife i spoke to really seemed to feel the same Grin i have never heard a woman sound so miserabke with life!

YANBU. My DH gave up nursing for this reason, well amongst others. I honestly don't know how people do it.

I worked nights for 2 years and it affected me so badly. I was permanently tired, had IBS and my periods became irregular. I feel your pain. I could never, ever go through that again.

YANBU! I once had to do nights and it was hell, I always felt crap and depressed. Obviously if I had no choice I would have to suck it up, but I would really like to never have to work nights again!

It is very bad for your health. I once did a few months night shift when I was younger and had no kids and I loved it, thought it was v cool, and having a beer at he end of the shift watching everyone else start their day was great.
There is no way I could do it now though, I would be even more of a gibbering wreck than I already am!

right now i should be on nights, but due to a slip on the stairs im nursing a painful coccyx injury....ill be skipping my nights this week.

yanbu. i hate my first one, it kills me.

i hate my first earlies too for the same reason...i never sleep well the night before.

nights are ok after the first one as long as your neighbours dont do what mine did last week and have all their double glazing changed...Angry

im ok till about 3am and then i struggle....

Oh god I don't miss nights at all.

We used to do seven on (12 hours no break) but then had seven off which was bliss. I loved my night duty stand off!

I am lucky now that I don't have to do nights or weekends which makes my working life with the children much easier.

How many nights do you have to do OP?

I used to do nights years ago.

It was bloody awful. I felt like I was in a daze due to exhaustion from not getting any quality sleep and I had digestive problems while ever I was on that shift.

Still makes me Shock when I read posts on MN where people who've clearly never worked nights proclaim that someone's DH should get in from his nightshift then look after the kids; do the school run; pick them up again at 3pm. Well he's got all day off, hasn't he? Confused

YANBU. I did 3 years of nights when I went back to work after having DD. It was utter hell and I questioned my own sanity many a time. Now I have a community 9-5 job and I love love love my job because I never want to go back to the hell that was nights.

I have never worked nights and I cannot begin to know how you all do it. I just couldn't - it must be hell. You have a bucketload of sympathy.

All the nightshift staff at our place (care home) seem to be depressed and permanently sickening for something Sad

I did four years of nights when I was younger, but couldn't manage it at all now.

I only do bank work so know that when I have picked up a night shift I won't work any more that week - its the only way that I can cope with it.

How those of you who do several in a row cope, I really don't know.

Although that feeling of sinking into bed the next morning is heavenly

I did nights for about five years when DC were little.

And agency nursing nights.

No choice.

I fucking hated it.

I feel for you.

Yanbu

To be so tired you physically hurt, the nausea, the disorientation, trying anything to stay awake during your drive home (mine is 35 mins and God knows how I have stayed awake at the wheel in the last 16 years of shifts involving nights). But - the anticipation is often worse, you can just do your job without the managers interfering, that 5am tea and toast, the sunrise, and that amazing feeling falling into bed at 9.30am.

My shift pattern doesn't help: night thurs, 12 hr day sun, tues night, sun 12 hr day, mon night. I don't know what day/night it is sometimes. I hate nites but there is something I love about them too.

I hated nights, fucking hated them. Especially as people used to think working nights meant I was available in the day.

The worst was working Part time, getting in and getting 3 hours sleep before ds was up. Then on non nursery days only getting another hours sleep during night time Sad

I do pmsl when people suggest night shifts as a way to get more done.
