According to this article Jason Lintern and his friends were playing a game where they would degrade strangers and get points. When they saw a mum walking along with her children they decieded that groping her against her will would be more point worthy so whilst the group of men egged him on he told her in front of the children to give him a feel and groped her breast against her will. When arrested he told police it was a game and he did not mean offence to his victim!!!! He only got 80 hours community service, and had to pay in total £350 (£250 went to the victim), despite inciting Jason Lintern to assault the mum in front of the children his friends appeared to have escaped scott free. If this is the sort of behaviour men like him is non offensive and Ok to do to a woman as she walked with her children on a saturday morning is it any wonder women do not feel safe to walk alone at night.

There are many crimes which receive community service and fines rather than prison. It's the way that sentencing policy in this county works these days.

At least he has a criminal record.

But what sort of message does it send out, that sexually assaulting a woman for fun is not a big deal. And his friends who appear to have incited him to commite the assault do not appear to have even been arrested. I also wonder if he would have got away scot free if he had done this in a bar or nightclub, i cannot help thinking the victim would be told "it was just a laugh, don't be so uptight luv."

It sends out the message that sentencing policy is often at odds with public sentiment, and sadly that is far from unique.

It also sends out the message that, even when sentences are light, you will still be prosecuted and end up with a criminal record that will be with you long term and may debar you from certain careers, and may come back to embarrass you at any time.

It sends out the message that thinking it's a drunken game does not let you off the hook.

It would be scandalous had the complaint not been investigated or no prosecution had ensued.

True, good point. But I do think his friends should have got a criminal record. I also think if he had done this to a girl in a nightclub he would not even have been questioned by the police.

I think you're right there - the friends were morally culpable too, and personally I would want them to have been done for some accessory or incitement sort of offence (don't know if such a charge exists though).

Incitement to commit a crime is a crime itself, or else there is conspiracy to commit sexual assault. Apparently he was not even added to the sex offendwers register.

smellslike,
he is not anyone famous, just same pathetic loser. He is a fan of bristol rovers (and was going to a match when he attacked the mother). The club should ban him.

It is vile, though the judge seems to think the fact the woman had her children with her makes it worse.

it really makes you wonder if doing this in a crowded shopping street on a saturday morning in front of the victim's children is deemed a game and inoffensive by men like this, what would a group of them egg each other on to do at two in the morning on a dark footpath with only the victim about?
