To wonder if people are really so ignorant about some jobs?

Or do they just pretend to be ?

It just seems to me like some people just sit there criticising every shop assistant they come across, bus driver, waiter, CM, cleaner, airport staff, and of course....teacher.

And the ignorance about what people in those jobs do or the ignorance about employment law is unbelievable. Are really grown ups there who don't know that bus drivers work with timetable, that restaurants rely on turnover, that all employees are entitled to lunch break and holidays, that CMs, cleaners, builders, plumbers, are S.E. and the the difference between SE and employee or that teachers don't work only the hours they teach? Basic facts about job duties, rights, tax, profit etc.

AIBU to think that some people should try and do these jobs? Or at least try to learn about them.

oh god yes

I waitress and the number of complaints i get about the cooking drives me nuts

i tell the customers to speak to the chef (its a small cafe chef can easily be reached), but no, they just want to moan to me. I tell some of them i dont do the cooking, they look at me blankly, they actually think i cook, waitress, do dishes and deal with the money

poeple can be very ignorant

YABU to expect people to familiarise themselves with every jobs terms and conditions, on top of brushing up their employment law knowledge at frequent intervals.

Why would I want to learn about what a builders job entails? I'd rather watch paint dry.

In this country there is a positive tendency to look down on people who do not work in an office.

The majority I encountered were really nice and friendly.

I'm a care worker. The number of people who tell me they couldn't do my job is immense.

What, you really can't clean a toilet, wipe someone with a flannel, cook a meal and do a couple of loads of laundry?

Or is it the talking to old/disabled people you don't want to sully yourself with?

You have a point about teachers, op. I used to be a secondary maths teacher with 13 weeks holiday a year. I am now a local government officer with the standard 5 weeks holiday a year. Guess what? Way more actual time off work now.

yanbu, I work in a very well known 'restaurant' as it fits around dd and the amount of customers that have told me I am stupid is unbelievable! I have a masters degree but choose a job to fit around my child!some people are extremely narrow minded imho

I think it's fine for people to be ignorant about other people's jobs, as long as they know that they are ignorant. The real problem arises when people make assumptions that they know stuff, when actually they know nothing.

Have you also noticed that the minute you tell someone what type of work you do and where you work, they can relate a horrible tale about that industry.

e.g. used to work for a major Bank. Never told anyone because all the bank bashing stories would come out.

As a teacher, I hear all about the "useless" teachers and the useless eduction system.

Er... no. And even if I did I wouldn't be discussing it.

My job is ridiculously cool, and I get to work with some really incredible people.

But whenever I talk about it the words 'arse wiper' still hang in the air.

ssd, if the food is bad, I would complain to the waitress too.

Not because I think she has cooked it, and not cause I think it is her fault.

but because she is the person i am dealing with in the restaurant. If she says I need to speak to the manager or the chef, I would expect her to get this person (or to get me to this person).

if I get served raw chicken, and if she asks "everything o.k.?" I would tell her "actually, the chicken is raw". if she would, like you, say "Well, it wasn't actually em who cooked it" I would go as obviously I would KNOW that.

Are you saying it would be more normal for to just ignore the waiter and barge into the kitchen asking "who cooked this?!"

Actually waitresses are supposed to deal with customer complaints. Some chefs really couldn't be let loose on the general public because they are hired on their cooking skills not their people skills.
