AIBU?

to ask what response you'd give?

To someone who keeps making passive aggressive comments about your figure?

I have a friend who means well but I think she is jealous as I've recently lost a lot of weight (2 stone). Every time I see her she makes comments about how good I look but they've always got a sting in the tail, for example "Oh you look so much more toned now, much less flabby than you were before", usually in front of as many people as possible.

I have started replying "Ooooh thank you, I'm so glad you think I look good, I'm so pleased about the weight loss".

Lighthearted, but what sort of responses would you give?

Try "thank you, I must share my secret with you so you can tone up too" Grin

"Well, being as young and attractive as I am I have found the skin has just popped back into shape, How's your acne doing? And have you got rid of that thrush round your mouth?"

All said in a booming voice.

"Ladies and gentlemen... can I introduce you to my friend... her Native American name is Dances with Backhanded Compliments"

Say, equally loudly "yes, it's a shame your thighs chafed so badly that time you tried to join in the exercise class, or you might be toned by now too"

Either just thanks, or say "sorry, what did you say" as if you did not hear what she said. If she meant it to be nasty she will cringe at having to repeat it in front of people. Its quite a good way to see if people meant something bitchily or not.

'Oh, thanks - it's really easy but you'll find the cellulite is the last thing to go.'

Ahem.

I should say you should say something terribly supportive and magnanimous given she's probably insecure ... but, well, I'd be tempted.

You've shed two stone, now maybe it's time to shed her, she doesnt sound like much of a friend.

I would have to say, "Why is it when you pay me a compliment, you always follow it by an insult?" in a loud voice.

But yes, the easiest thing would be to drop her as a friend.

"I know, I feel so much better for it, and its not been as hard as I thought it would be, I'd recommend it to anyone" (Big Smile)

Is that PA enough? :o

Cheeky besom.

You could either ignore and drop her as a "friend" Hmm or gush very happily and say "Oh thank you!! It's amazing that soooo many people have complimented me lately. Aren't people lovely?".
Then beam happily.

I always think you do better not to engage. Just say 'yes, I'm thrilled'. Whatever you do, keep the same phrase-she will get bored in the end.
If you get clever or rude and she will know that you are nettled.
It can be fun just to take people at face value-they really can't tell if you get the sub text or not and there is not much satisfaction in someone who 'doesn't get it'.
