AIBU?

To have decided on a new career path that will require a job change and initial salary decrease?

I hate my Job.

I am good at it, but I hate it.

I have decided I want to do something else that I have toyed with on a nd off for years. This new career path will likely involve some training and/or salary decrease until I am up to speed.

I haven't spoken to DP, and I am currently up for a promotion that will double my salary. The thought of being tied to this job is making me feel nauseous

So, AIBU to want to jack it all in and get training for the job I want?

Nope. But do speak to DP as it may involve a change of lifestyle for both of you. I've been the main breadwinner for years but am going to earn a pittance to start with in what I'm doing. DH is supportive - he can see how unwell I've been through stress recently.

Watching this with interest. I'm the breadwinner and about to take a new job that means a significant drop in salary - not so much that we can't pay all the bills, but enough for us really to notice it. I'm hoping it'll pay off in the long run with increased prospects and better marketability, so if I'm made redundant I'll have more chance of getting another job than I do in my present very specialist role.

I agree that it's important to speak to your DP. My DH is supportive of my move, and I'd have had a serious wobble about it if he wasn't.

You're very lucky if you actually know what you want to do and there is a way of achieving that. Definitely discuss with your dp but don't stay in a role that makes you feel ill.

Would love to know what all these career changes were from and to.

Why have you applied for a job when the thought of being tied to it makes you feel nauseous?

Without knowing what field you are currently working in and whether your expectations of advancement in a new field are realistic, it isn't possible to give an informed opinion as to whether you should 'jack it all in'.

Mine is from public to a big charity, with a bit of a change in professional direction.

YANBU i retrained and halved my salary for 3 years.

Best thing i ever did, i now earn twice as much as i did, with a job that suits my family life and gives me job satisfaction (most days)

Good luck with what you decide

Keep looking and thinking, MardyBra, it will come to you.

What did you want to do when you were 16?

Could you stick out the promotion for a year or so, and save the extra salary to sustain you while you re-train/get started in the new career?

Insomnia, I'm not sure that's much of a guide - I wanted to be an astronaut when I was 16! My best friend wanted to be a vet even though she was useless at all science subjects.

Will you be studying to retrain?.Cos if you are, depending on what course it is,there are benefits/financial help for studying listed on the DWP website. They have an assesment income checker thingy. Both me and my dh are starting from scratch (again)and doing bursaried courses at Uni-Social Work & Mental Health Nursing. It will be a struggle but,it hopefully will be worth it than the crap (shit pay) jobs we've been doing!.I'd go for it,you'll regret it if you dont, and you could end up getting ill with stress-then you may need my 'mental health nursing skills' :)
