To think these people deserve to be jailed - POTENTIALLY UPSETTING TO SOME!

This is awful, A mother and father went to the pub leaving granny in charge of their child, alcholic granny falls asleep and the baby drowns in a pond. They have got away scot-free, no jail just a suspended sentence!

AIBU to think that something is seriously wrong with our justice system!? Why have we not learnt anything since Baby P? how are these awful awful things still happening?

I read that yesterday.. the parents were fully aware that the grandmother was an alcoholic, so yes, they are guilty of neglect IMO, but I dont see what good jailing them would do.

Well, the parents chose to leave the child - regularly - with a woman they knew to be a raging alcoholic, in a house they knew was filled with faeces and other hazards, and they did this to get raging drunk themselves.

So I don't think they made very good choices and certainly were neglectful.

A child has died because of the actions and choices of the adults who are supposed to be responsible for them. Poor, poor child. I realise that they did not, according to reports, intend for the child to come to any harm, which is why it is neglect and not murder. But it is neglect that resulted in the death of the child and I don't think it is unreasonable that they face consequences for that. Whether the death of the child is consequence enough or whether they should have been jailed as well is going to be something that people will argue about.

So lets compare this to the McCann case where the parents left their 3 young children shunned completely unsupervised to go off drinking and got off scot free resulting in the death abduction of their 3 yo.But of course they are respectable middle aged, upper middle class in a Tapas bar not young chavs drinking in a boozer!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have exactly the same opinion on neglect regardless the 'class' of the person who has behaved neglectfully.

agree line runner! Neglect is neglect, ultimately your children are your responsibility, you fail them, you should take a consequence for that. Different people have different ideas on what is or isnt okay, but generally IMO its common sense mostly.

What a tragedy not sure if the parent knew the granny was drunk when they left the kid. Losing a child in such a heartbreaking way is punishment enough, we all do really stupid things but for most the consequences will not be with this every day for the rest of our lives. So sad for a little life lost and all the other lives shattered.

I Geelong the same about the mcanns, paying in a horrendous way for a wrong decision.

I referred to BabyP as this is yet another case of a child dying at the hands of an irresponsible family, As parents they would of know that the grandmother was an alchoholic so IMO are equally responsible.

I just feel it is something that could be avoided.

RE the mccanns; i feel regardless of class we are responsible for our own actions, and wether that be a moment of mis-judgement or not we need to be held accountable for them. I wish that there was more that could be done to prevent these tragedies from happening!

For me, there are resonances with the Baby P case. There were numerous signs that he was at risk and these were not properly followed up. A report by local councillors found that he was failed by many agencies over the course of his life.
