to wonder if anyone else out there has ID twin boys who are delayed with milestones?

Hi,
I have 11 month old (11 months in a few days) ID twin boys. They were exactly one month premature from their due date. They're doing ok - eating very well, so size/growth wise are big babies for their age. They're very smiley and respond to their name, they look over when I ask 'where's daddy' or their big sister's name. on occasion, they might look up if i say 'where's the light' etc. they're babbling, saying da da/ la la la, etc.
However, they're only sitting up at 9 months, don't have great strength in legs, but can stand with help. they're 'bum shuffling' to get around but not crawling yet, although they can roll and wriggle on tummies.
they seem much more passive that my old DD, who was almost feeding herself, was cruising furniture and standing up by herself at this age.
should i be worried? they seem like happy little boys, maybe it's a 'twin thing' if they're more passive. they were only 1 month premature so not that behind. am hearing lots about high incidence of ID and ASD so am hoping boys will be ok.

I should mention that I also feel hugely guilty as didn't have as much time to play/read stories/talk to/practise standing up with my boys as I did with my first child.
I feel a bit guilty that I'm to blame for them being a bit behind developmentally.
am back to work now and boys in a creche

any advice welcome

Are they a bit behind developmentally (serious question)? Sitting at 9 mo (actually 8 mo if they were 1 mo early) is within the normal range, 13 mo is the average for walking (and up to 18 mo is normal) and not all children crawl.

The milestones you describe (sitting/walking) are not used as indicators of ASD. Are there other reasons that you are concerned?

I would second that they don't sound delayed to me. They're meeting milestones within normal ranges.

They sound completely normal to me OP

One of the worst things you can do is compare milestones...though I accept it's hard not to.

They also sound completely normal to me.... My PFB (who was inundated with 1-2-1 attention at all times Grin ) didn't crawl until she was 15 months, although she ended up walking before then! So I wouldn't worry at all...

My DS sat at 10mths, crawled at 13mths and walked a few weeks before his second birthday. He is now a perfectly ordinary three year old.

Normal is a much wider range than those bloody milestone charts would have you think.

I suggest you burn them.

im usually on the sn board if your at all worried and you may or may not have reason to be you should go to your gp and ask for a referal to the child development clinic to see a paediatrician but in meantime try not to worry it is probably just they are delayed due to the prematurity but once under the child development clinic they can keep an eye on it for you

I have ID twin girls who were 2 months premature. They rudely healthy, so no residual problems. They walked at 13 months (which is 11 months really) and were generally very ahead in anything physical.

They are however very late talkers. At almost 3, they are talking, but its limited. I am not worrying as they are as sharp as tacks, potty trained in a day, understand quite complex instructions and have no apparent behavioral problems.

I would say that they too, were quite "passive", in that they are placid and well behaved. They are just generally happy. They are quick to fit in with what i am doing, understand new things or routines immediately and just slot right in and cooperate. I havent experienced other children, but I can only describe them as "easy babies", but maybe that is a twin thing too.

However, they are poor talkers although very bright. I am putting this down to being twins too, as they are very involved with each other and understand each other perfectly, so have much less motivation to speak properly.

You are told that premmies, twins and particularly boy twins can be a bit behind, but yours dont seem particularly so from what you have described.

no I might add I said if worried go to gp but from what you have said on here they sound totally fine (my ds never crawled btw he just bum shuffled) so unless there are other things you have not mentioned on here it sounds like everythings ok and shouldnt be anything to worry about.

Sound normal to me!

ps. everyone with older children feels guilty about not being able to spend as much time with the younger one's. I did anyway.
