Today the noise from my washing machine has become unbearable and DH who is an engineer (so not just guessing) has taken it apart and diagnosed that the bearing has gone.
The machine gets lots of use but is less than 5 years old.
It would cost in the region of £5 for a replacement part (DH knows all about bearings!!!) BUT it is not possible to take apart, it has been built in a manner which makes it impossible to repair - it is not possible to dissemble, it's not possible to buy a replacement bearing OR drum.

So here we are trying to recycle and reuse and cut down waste and bugger me washing machines are throw away?????????

ouch - now i'm worried. my machine is an indesit and is also nearly 6 years old.....

Get a Hotpoint next time - the bearings went on mine, but it was repairable....

DH an I were having a similar conversation about new cars and not being able to tinker around the engine (for minor issues) as they are built in such a way only engineers from dealerships can get into them.

My folks (and I - have since moved out ) moved into their 70's bungalow in 1986. Traded up so couldn't afford a new kitchen despite general shiteness of original one. Mum got an inheritance in 2002 and treated herself to a new kitchen amongst other things. The original Miele dishwasher went because it couldn't be built in - the washing machine has been moved to the futility room and is still going strong thanks to a lovely man who used to be an engineer for Miele (how we met him) and is now a family friend

I had an indesit, didn't break down at all for the first 5 years then EVERYTHING went wrong with it in the space of about 3 months and it had to go. It was the same with an indesit mini dishwasher I bought about a year later. I was pretty disappointed and have bought Zanussi this time, fingers crossed they last a bit longer.

YANBU to hope that things last longer than 5 years- it is odd that we are being encouraged to repair and recycle but loads of appliances are going into landfill.
