AIBU?

To think that lollipop men and women are overrepresented in the NY honours?

They 3 have recieved MBEs, this compares to 7 school governors link to BBC news. Schools generally have at least 10 governors where as not all of them even have a lollipop person. Also being a lollipop person is a job, whereas being a governor is an unpaid voluntary position. So am I missing something about the role of lollipop people? Before I offend anyone I would like to say that I don't have any personal experience of them. I also imagine that lots of other areas are disproportionately over of underrepresented.

YANBU no one should get an honour for merely doing the job for which they are paid.

To be honest I am a governor, but I just picked up on the numbers as a comparison as they are in the same paragraph on the BBC website. I assume you would need to do a lot more than attend a few meetings, which is what I do, but plenty of governors put in huge amounts of effort. Our headteacher would be worthy of an honour. As another comparison - there are headteachers, but no other teachers on the list. I am sure that most people have come across at least one teacher who was incredibly dedicated but not a headteacher and might be worthy of an honour.

I think we should start a mn campaign and demand that those Lollipop Persons return their baubles and trinkets, whereupon we can distribute them to the deserving/needy (eg school governors)

What do we want?

the redistribution of honours given to Lollipop Persons to more deserving folk like school governors!

When do we want it?

...oh I don't know maybe by February. No later than March at any rate

It is probably down to public perception. Many governors, teachers, head teachers go above and beyond the call of duty and have a real passion for their schools. Lollipop people are in-your-face public servants who can easily be measured in the public eye. Have you ever met a lollipop person who doesn't encourage children to keep safe? It is an easy title to maintain and the public love seemingly ordinary people.

Surely we should insist that honours are fairly distributed based on the proportion of the population, this will mean that some minority occupations may have to share. For example a tree surgeon could be awarded the M, an actuary the B and a dog walker the E.

TV folk, sports stars, occasional scientist and lollipop attendants, an odd mix really.

I now harbour a desire to become a subversive lollipop lady and teach the children how to play chicken with the cars.

Knowing of some people who have received them on the military list and some who have been put forward but haven't I would say there is very little logic involved in the whole process!!

But 2shoes - they get paid to do that. Governors don't get paid and some spend hours each week doing school related stuff. Plenty of other jobs involve standing in the rain - why aren't there any gardeners, binmen, the lovely people who run our local recycling centre, people who risk their lives picking litter from the side of motorways. Or normal nurses or midwives (there is only 1 very senior midwife on the list). Or people who work in old peoples homes.

I'm all for a worthwhile cause but is this one?
Down with lollipop persons, nah can't do it.

Our lollipop lady used to inform me about the abuse she used to get from drivers, do governors get a lot of abuse?

Well unless things have changed you won't have to worry next year as haven't the spending cuts effectively sacked them all? Maybe they'll remember you next year Hmm

I thought that you had to be put forward for an honour, perhaps governors don't know the right people Wink

Anyone can put someone forward for an honour. You can download the application from a website. I know, I've done it and the person was honoured.

I am no one special, BTW.

So, if you think your HT deserves one, fill out an app and suggest them.

Not a bad idea to limit honours to those who are just doing their job. If someone goes above &beyond their normal job then they could be considered. Which could include lollypop people, teachers, care assistants etc. No ideahow you could quantify it though.

I don't think anyone should get honours - even those doing charity/community stuff.

Lollipop patrols annoy me because around here they seem to only work at pelican crossings when 500yds down the road idiot kids are dodging traffic.
