On Sunday my dd(6) was involved in our city's Christmas lights parade which ended in the cathedral and a short carol service. All very lovely. The children (and a few parents) were standing in a huddle at the front. (Note - I was shoved between a pulpit and enormous flower display nowhere near dd!) However, there weren't enough song sheets to go around. My dd couldn't remember the words to The 12 Days of Xmas, so tried to peer at a sheet near her, being held by a classmate's mother. Said mother responded by snapping songsheet shut and saying, "Get your own." Hmmm. I find that really odd behaviour generally, let alone to a little girl at a carol service! End result, I had to deal with dd's battle with trying to understand, "why that lady did that/said that." Hard life lesson.

I assume that she didn't stay behind afterwards for tea with the Vicar?

I really can't understand why she did that. I remember having a similar experience when I moved schools when I was 9 and tried sharing hymn books with the lad next to me who wouldn't let me and laughed that I didn't know any of the words... But she's an adult and everyone knows that you share songsheets at every possibility

Im sorry ,let me get this straight ,an adult refused to share her song sheet with a 6 year old ? I would suggest to your DD never to get close to this woman again as she clearly has issues with sharing as she was dragged up in the gutter .

The woman sounds like a bitch. Best to just tell DD that (though not in those words!). I can't understand why an adult would be that nasty though, but people are maddening sometimes.

What a nasty shock, I'm so sorry! I was under the impression that it was traditional to share hymn sheets in the first place! And nobody should ever bark at strangers' kids like that, least of all in church!

Thanks everyone. Think I just needed to hear other people say what I was/am thinking! She's clearly tapped.

As for approaching her - the mama-bear part of me really really wants to give 'what for' - but I'm too much of a chicken/sensible member of society to get in a playground fight!! I'll content myself with mentioning it to every other mother I can get hold of in the playground!
