if I've said that talking hurts that I shouldn't have to talk

called NHS direct last night as I've got this stupid coughing bug, and my throat felt so swollen I was struggling to breath. DH is on the phone to them explaining that I can't come to the phone as talking hurts me. She insists I talk, so he passes the phone over and I have to attempt to whisper. She even tells me to talk louder! But will not allow me to pass the phone back to DH.

Luckily the nurse was much more reasonable, and was lovely.

But what on earth was all the rest about?

That's strange. When I phoned NHS direct on dh's behalf, they totally accepted what I told them and didn;t need to speak to dh.

What did they advise btw?

You have a sore throat- it's painful and makes it hard to talk comfortably. You also state you were "struggling to breathe". My guess is the Nhsd advisor wanted to assess your ability to talk to see if you really were struggling to breathe or not. Sore throat= Nhsd advice over the phone, struggling to breathe = being passed through to anbulance service and being sent an emergency ambulance.
