Allergies and intolerances

Hi All! I am new to this board

Ds1 doesn't really have any food allergies as such, but does get rashes around his mouth from things like packets of red/brown sauce that you get at fish n chips shops. I just presumed that it is the colouring he has a problem with.

Ds2 is a very special little boy. He suffers from congenital heart defects and had open heart surgery 4 months ago to correct some of his problems. He was also diagnosed with eczema at 5 months of age. He responded well to treatment but still required wet wrapping at his worst. Jamie does have some food related problems in that he doesn't eat much in the way of table foods for his age and still eats baby jars most of the time, and even the 7 months jars are too chunky for him sometimes and have to be blended. Due to this, he has not really been introduced to anything that I would consider and allergic food (plus he's still breastfed, so no milk either).

Yesterday we all went out for ice cream. I had a walnut and maple syrup ice cream from Thorntons. The lady broke the cone, so put the cone & ice cream inside another cone. Anyway, I ate the ice cream & cone and we decided to let Jamie have a try of the spare cone. It was a waffle type cone, coated with chocolate and had a tiny bit of melted ice cream that had dribbled down the inside. He tried it, seemed to like it. 20 minutes later, I looked at Jamie in his
pushchair and noticed that his face was covered in a red, blotchy rash and it kind of looked angry, best way I can describe it. I kept an eye on his breathing which seemed fine and 30 minutes later the rash was gone. Do you think was a food allergy?? Jamie has tried chocolate a couple of times and never had a reaction and he eats cheese and is ok. Would the walnut from the ice cream have caused this?? He eats honey nut cheerios and is fine.

Just a bit of family history. My side of the family suffer from asthma, I have hay fever and a couple of food intolerances (quorn and something in alcholol). My sister in law was fine until she got to about 20 and then became allergic to all sorts, fruit and veg etc.

So..... what do you think?? I am going to mention it to Jamie's dr anyway as we are there for a BP check on Friday. If yo have made it this far....Well done! This has just been playing on my mind since yesterday
afternoon and of course I am worried, especially in light of his other problems.

Many thanks for your help

hi-welcome to mumsnet, it does sound like a food allergy, i think the best thing to do would be to go to your gp as soon as poss because he needs to be allergy tested as the next reaction could be dangerous.

Is it possible it could have been the dairy in the ice cream rether than the walnut?

sorry that should be 'rather than the walnut'

My dh wondered about the dairy, but wouldn't he have a similar reaction to cheese or butter? He has butter in his food to help him put on weight and has eaten cheese before and any milk soggy cheerios that ds1 drops on the floor at breakfast time (it's a bit like having a dog I guess!)

Welcome Connorsmum... It seems to me like an allergic reaction to the walnuts, DS got like that after licking a peanut, so definitively worth mentioning to the doctor.
