Allergies and intolerances

If you eat a gluten free diet (or are a coeliac) would you risk this?

Dh is a coeliac (his description), diagnosed as a small baby.

I bought a bag of ready washed/chopped stir fry veg from Sainsbury's today, the Basics range. (in my defence I normally wash and chop the veg myself, but this was a real bargain). I had it all planned out, chicken stir fry with rice noodles, take a portion out for dh before adding the soy sauce.

I look on the back of the bag "not suitable for wheat gluten allergy sufferers" - due to the methods of manufacture used. (or similar wording)

Would you risk it? Dh says yes, I am thinking maybe yes, but re-wash it. Makes me wonder what on earth the method of manufacture was?! Did the staff eat their sandwiches next to the machine or something, and add some complementary breadcrumbs?

Realistically I expect it was the same machine used to prepare other stir fry type items such as egg noodles and Sainsbury's is just being cautious.

Yes, I'd risk it. As you say, it'll be because it is a line that also has stir fry with noodles made on it, and although they clean between, they can't guarantee gf.

Do the rest of you not like tamari ? We only ever have gf soy sauce in the house

Hi CMOTdibbler, thanks for your reply, you've helped me out on gf issues before. What is tamari?

I tend to serve dh and dd2 first (prior to the soy sauce being added). dd2 doesn't get it due to the high salt and she's not yet 2.

Incidentally although Sainsbury's do have a lot of stuff labelled "suitable for coeliacs" I've noticed that some quite random foods have the above warning on it!

Tamari is gluten free soy sauce - you can find it in the free from section. It's a bit stronger than normal ss, but DH tells me it is just as nice.

Sainsburys seem to have the most warnings of 'may not be safe' of all the supermarkets. Not sure whether they just pickier than others or what tbh

Thanks for the info re tamari.

Incidentally dh is very excited (don't read any further if you are a veggie). I got him some gf sausage rolls from Sainsbury's today..

The sausage rolls are DS (Dietary Specials) - he is having them tomorrow night with Heinz beans and oven chips. (we lead such an exciting life down here! )

They are frozen, about £2 for 2 largish ones.

He hasn't tried the Genius bread, I will pass on your comment as he has a voucher.

He recently signed up to some glutafin offer and got a box of stuff, several full size produces. The white bread didn't need "refreshing" and seemed ok (to him not me!)

Our Sainsburys has a special free from frozen section Noonki (not that you're bothered of course, just making polite chit chat )

HoochieMomma until recently (afaik) although most Kelloggs cereals were deemed too high in gluten, the rice varieties (rice krispies, coco pops and ricicles were deemed ok). When dh got his most recent food list, Kelloggs had been removed entirely

Sainsburys rice krispies equivalent are clearly marked as suitable for coeliacs.

They do have the best f from range, I agree. However a few months ago they discontinued a couple of lines (the chicken steaks in breadcrumbs being one of them) due to quality control issues which did worry me a bit! They have recently reinstated them.
