Crawling and allergies

Just need to share really...hopefully there are some mums out there who understand...
My son is severly allergic to peanuts, various mixed nuts, egg, dairy, wheat, sesame and soya.

We are managing but he has just started to crawl. Altho it is wonderful, it just suddenly makes all the risks seem greater. Baby groups and public places are now no go areas...every biscuit crumb is feared. Just have to be extra vigilant i guess.

I agree , my daughter had an allergy to dairy and wheat . She would come out in a rash etc and vomit when she ate any of those products .

However she is growing out of them slowly , how old is ur lil one ?

oh god, this is an awful phase, yes. ds2 is now walking and absolutely will not stay in a highchair or buggy if we go out for coffee. He is however anaphylactic for dairy (dp took him shopping the other day and brought ds2 back swollen faced because he had touched the conveyer belt in the supermarket which had had milk split on it in some previous incarnation (possibly slight exageration, but you get the picture )).

No advice, just lots of symphathy - I know what you're going through.

Sympathies from me as well, my ds (nearly 3) has the same allergies as yours, apart from the wheat, his are also severe. You do get used to being vigilant and it just becomes second nature eventually. Every new phase seems impossible to manage but you do. I've just weaned dd who luckily has no allergies but having milk around the house causes me no end of trouble but I am getting used to it. Kids with allergies do learn very quickly not to pick things up and eat them without checking with you. DS has been doing that from very early on but you can't rely on them doing it.

Just a bit of advice about baby groups. We've always gone to a play group and I hadn't mentioned ds's allergies to anyone there until dd arrived and I told them I would probably have to stop coming because I couldn't watch ds all the time to avoid him eating their biscuits. They were happy to change the biscuits they served to 'safe' ones. It might be worth asking if you could provide the food for any baby groups you attend so you can at least relax some of the time. People tend to be quite sympathetic once you explain the severity of the symptoms. Good luck!

Sympathy from here too! DD has a mix of allergies (like yours but not wheat or soya). Its really hard. No real advice, but you will cope. I do take inspiration from my BIL who manages (quite severe) nut allergy with a lot of grace and little fuss. It does give me comfort that even if DD is stuck with the allergies it she will grow up and learn to cope with them!

thank you everyone! Really reassuring to share! Am flying in a few days with my lil boy and feel quite anxious about it. Obviously no crawling allowed onboard but just also going to have to be extra vigilant with other surfaces.

Just will keep encouraging to walk as soon as possible x
