Allergies and intolerances

Suspected food intolerance in 2 year old. Month after month of horrible nappies...

Seems to be getting worse, if the nappies are anything to go by - 3 or more very sloppy and smelly ones per day, no 'firm' ones for ages. There has always seemed to be some possible explanation for this - colds, chest infection, teething etc - but ds1 doesn't seem to have any of those at the moment.

I'm guessing that he must be intolerant to something. Don't quite know where to go from here. The obvious thing would be to see my GP, but I suspect he'll just tell me I'm being neurotic (he's a bit scathing about such things - doesn't believe in reflux for example). Are there people one can see privately who diagnose this sort of thing?

Or should I just try an elimation diet. In theory that shouldn't be hard as ds1 eats such a limited range of foods (cereal, bagels, cheese and yoghurts are the mainstays of his diet).

Did this start after a stomach bug? My dd's did and was told emzymes in stomach are upset with lactose for a good 2 months afterwards so was put on lactose free diet for 2 months then weaned back on and no more problems.

Hi mine had and still sometimes do have what doctors call "toddler diarrhoea". I've done some reading myself and it turned out that the high fructose content in apple juice was the culprit. I've taken him off apple juice made from concentrate and within a few days it was firming up. I can now give him small quantities of pressed apple juice, I think they also sell it as cloudy apple juice. their bowels aren't developed enough to tolerate the high sugar content and as a result you experience loose tummies!

Hope this could shed some light, unless yours is completely unrelated.

He hasn't had a stomach bug (or not one that I'm aware of).

I thought it might have been caused by orange juice. MIL and dh kept giving it to him, even when I asked them not to (lots of 'what harm can it do' comments). But it has been 2 weeks since he last had any.

So, I think it might be an intolerance to one or more of:

  1. dairy
  2. wheat
  3. sugar

sounds like my DS and he's still having problems at nearly 4 - although he also has a rash that comes and goes. Definitely see the doctor, at least to get it written down on his notes in case it is an ongoing problem, then you can say "this has been going on for X amount of time"

Chances are the GP will say toddler diarreah but should ask for a stool sample to check for any nasty stomach bugs which is what they did for my DS last year.

RE: the elimination diet - we are just starting out, my ds had soya milk as a replacement to cows milk over the weekend and as if by magic the rash he had all last week has gone, i dont know if there is a definite link there, we are due at the hospital next week to see whats going on.
