CMA - really?

So I went to GP today as HV had suggested my Daughter has reflux... (she's not gaining much weight, cries during feeds difficult to get her to finish a bottle she just refuses and gags, brings up her milk, and just generally grumpy around feeding time but can tell she is starving bless her)... so I was hoping to get infant gaviscon on prescription, however GP has turnt around and said it's CMA and prescribed me special milk powder... I've googled symptoms for CMA and daughter doesn't show any of these i.e no rashes or watery eyes etc... but shows all the symptoms for reflux, what should I do? I don't want to go back to GP acting as if they don't know what they are on about but just don't see how he could of decided it's CMA so quickly just from the symptoms I told him surely there are more tests etc? Xx

I’ve got CMPA and don’t have rashes either. The symptoms you describe are for an I’ve reaction, I’m non-ige. Symptoms can include wind, stomach pain, swelly tummy, mucus in poo, swapping between loose stools and constipation and refusing to eat even when starving (especially if you know the stuff being offered will make you feel worse).

Why not give LO the new formula and see if things improve?

If you are still unsure, I’d ring the Allergy UK helplinecand tslk it through with them 🙂

Thank you! I just looked up non-Ige symptoms and they seem to fit her a lot better.. which has put my mind at ease! I hope the hypoallergenic formula helps her soon its horrid having a upset baby :( xx

Oh OP you have my sympathies, dd has non-ige cmpa and was awful for the first 3 months until she was diagnosed. Three weeks after, she was a totally different baby. It will get better. Smile

My son has cmpa and his symptoms were: frequent 'posseting', constant crying, unable to lie on back, trapped wind, tummy pain

He was put on ranitidine for the reflux which helped while we got cows milk out of both our systems (breastfeeding).

Hope the new milk works! Awful seeing them like that :(

Thanks everyone! She seems to be getting better :) I have been using infant Gaviscon in every other feed (that stuff is expensive!) to help her reflux whilst the milk gets into her system! But already it's like having a different baby she still has the odd unhappy moment but it's more like once a day compared to the full day it used to be!!

She always seems to dry retch, especially whilst drifting to sleep and it worries me so hopefully that will stop soon aswell :( fingers crossed!
