CMPA and reflux-getting desperate. Help!!

My LO is 13 weeks old and has been CMPA since 2 weeks. He also has bad reflux. Tried a combination of different things which have not worked. Some better than others.

We are on nutramigen and have been for 2 months. He improved for the first month and then symptoms started returning. Dietcian said to sort reflux first before looking at the milk.

So we have tried gaviscon. Was good for stopping the puking but gave him colic like symptoms and firmer poos. Very unsettled during the night.
Also tried carobel to thicken, didn't agree with him. Now on ranitidine which is not working at all. I'd even say his puking is worse!!! He hardly sleeps in the night, constantly wriggling, whinging, moaning. So unsettled.

I'm going to ring the Dietcian again tomorrow but I'm so stuck on what we can do next. We tried neocate for a few days two months ago and that made him very windy and unsettled too.

I'm getting desperate now, we hardly get any sleep and I have an unhappy baby :( any suggestions?

There are other medications after ranitidine for reflux. I think you need to ask for a referral to a pedeatrian (sp?)

If he's cmpi he will still be reacting to nutramigen as it contains milk proteins still, try neocate or another amino acid based milk?

We were also told thst cmpi can cause refluxer you need that sorted first!! Didn't help in our case!

Our DS had CMPA, the combination of Nutramigen, Gaviscon and colocynth granules for the colic which gaviscon caused worked for us.

It's awful.. I feel your pain. Go see the GP and get stronger reflux Meds. Ranitidine worked wonders for us. We didn't get on with the first milk we were given as still had milk in it. We moved on to Puramino which is for those who still react. I know it's hard work but keep pushing GP I promise you'll get there.

You have my full sympathy, we went through this two years ago with my youngest. She ended up on nutramigen Puramino (amino acid based so no milk protein in it to react to) and she was put on omeprazole to deal with the reflux (gaviscon and ranitidine didn't do a thing for my dd). We tried quite a few combinations of milk and meds but found the puramino and omeprazole were the only ones that made a difference.

I'd ask for a referral to a paediatrician as they are used to this problem and know what can be prescribed. Good luck!

Is relactation a possibility with the doctors help? You can then eradicate the cmp by not eating dairy. I mention this as a lot of people don't realise it can be done. Domperidone can be used to help. I hope you find a solution to suit all of you.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I spoke with the Dietcian and she's finally given us an amino acid based formula, fingers crossed this makes a difference. Still not entirely sure if the ranitidine is working so will have to wait and see with that. Our doc did say if it doesn't work then he will be referred to a pead and tests to be done. It's horrible seeing your baby go through pain :(

Mumblepuppy them wedges look good! We do prop his crib up atm but the wedges are perfect for when he moves into his cot

Omeprazole is the gold standard for treating reflux, better than ranitidine for lots of babies. May be worth a try.
