Dairy free and fish and chips?

Hi

We are trying the experiment of a dairy free diet for DD who has longstanding bowel issues. Evidence base is by no means certain, but I am happy to give anything a go at this stage, so we're trying it for a few weeks and review. We've had a promising couple of days but more problematic again today, and I realise we had fish and chips last night.

How often do people on here find fish batter provokes a reaction? It's made to the chip shop's 'special recipe' and I took a flyer on hoping it would be just flour and water.

Thanks for any advice.

I have a dairy free DD and SIL. Most of the time they leave the batter and eat the fish but we find that if we ask the staff they will know if it's a milk free batter and it often is.
I nearly dropped a clanger last week when buying some frozen oven chips, several 'premium' chips have milk protein in their list of ingredients.

It can be a pain ensuring things are dairy free but it has made a huge difference for DD.

Some places will use milk in the batter. You will eventually get in the habit of asking everywhere you go. Most restaurant/takeaways are happy to answer questions and tweak things.

Thanks! I've finally managed to get their restaurant menu and it doesn't have milk listed as an allergen but who knows? As you say I will have to get into the way of asking.

Thanks again!

Old thread I know but as someone who has severe intolerances I will say that it takes a fair while (months) for the gut lining to heal after damage from allergies/intolerances. Complete abstinence from offending products before you see a real change. Very likely because gut is inflamed, it was irritated by all the grease in the fast food. Best to avoid greasy food, citrus and spices while healing to avoid further irritation oh and caffeine.
