My son is 2 years 9 months and at 5 months old went into anaphylactic shock with a yoghurt.

Since then food after food he reacts to. Ranging from anaphylaxis to non-ige reactions (stomach pains and mucous in his poo).

We are seen at St Thomas twice a year. They are fantastic.

On Thursday we saw them and some allergies are worse but his cows milk weal on the SPT has gone from 10mm to 5mm in a year.

So they asked me to do a home trial.

24 hours ago I gave him a tiny bit of biscuit with baked in cows milk butter. And hes just had loose nappies full of mucous.

Ive emailed the dietician and wont give him any more. But I wondered, those who have been through this, is this normal?

Does this mean the trial ends? Is it good to keep giving to try and desensitise the body or can carrying on be a detriment?

Again Im waiting for an email I just thought id see if anyone here had experience.

TIA.

what instructions did the immunologist give you regarding a home challenge?

She told me how to do it. And to stop if any instant reactions happened (hives, swelling, anaphylaxis etc) but she said 'he'd more likely have a delayed reaction' but stupid me never asked what I should do if that happened.

I also did something very stupid.

I breastfeed him still and ate one of the biscuits. I cant believe I was so stupid, I havent had dairy in 2 years. I dont know what I was thinking.

its easy to make a mistake eating the wrong thing, don't beat yourself up about it.
However I would ring the immunologist and explain what happened and ask for advice.
take photos of rash and nappy contents to show at next appointment, or send via e-mail.

we all stumble through this allergy thing and reactions happen. Its part and parcel of having to deal with our kids allergies, we have all felt guilty over something allergy related at times. Please update on your son and the doctors response with regard to the challenge.

eragon it was actually the allergy paeditrician, the gastro paed and the dietician in London we saw.

However, by coincidence we are seeing an immunologist on Thursday about vaccinations (which Im really battling about, thats a whole other thread and worry) so should I mention it to her, even though she isnt in cahoots with the specialists in London?

I have emailed the London team anyway and will go by the advice they give me. Although nothing will make me try giving him more baked milk thats for sure.

I'm very surprised they suggested you do it at home, given his previous anaphylaxis. Dd1's were always in the hospital, strict monitoring and gradually increasing doses over a day (if you get that far with no reaction).

Yes so I keep being told actually. Confused

I always imagined it being in a hospital setting, I must admit.
