Allergies and intolerances

oat intolerance or just coincidence (and a bit of pfb)

Hello, i am rather clueless about intolerances but am getting suspicious. I was hoping to mine the great wisdom of mn to see if i'm just being a bit mad or if there might really be an issue :o

Dd is 10 months and a few weeks ago we started having porridge for breakfast. At round the same time she started getting terrible wind, soft smelly poo and waking in the night howling and writhing. We put it down to teething, stomach bug, random unknown baby thing and didn't connect it to the porridge at all.

However, I then ran out of oats and we didn't have porridge for almost a week and dd's stomach settled and sleeping improved. I still didn't make any connection until we had porridge again and that same night she was up farting and crying again.

3 days later and no oats and she seems to be improving again.

The thing is I don't know much about these things and was wondering if it is the oats would you expect her to be showing signs soon after eating rather then later that evening? Also it has taken a couple of days before any improvement after stopping eating oats, is this normal or would you expect her to be feeling better quicker?

Try it once more and see what happens.

There are different types of food sensitivities - the IgE response is noticeable quickly causing swelling of the lips etc, rash, wheezing

But an IgG response usually takes longer to be noticeable and is more likely to manifest as digestive upsets.

Oats are quite a common problem.

Assuming that its not the milk that's causing the problems. Unless you are using her normal breast milk/formula to make it.

How's she doing now?

Could it be a gluten problem, as oats have gluten?

Just a thought...

perhaps its just too high in fibre for you babys bowel at the moment?

coupled with fruit and other veg in the day, that could be the problem.

Oats give me tummy ache- and they cause colic in horses.. Just saying!

Hi, thanks for the replies!

I went to the doc and she suggested gluten. So we have been gluten and oat free for just over a week now. There has been an improvement in her sleep over the past few nights but annoyingly dd also got a nasty cold so we aren't certain if its the gluten free diet or just some post viral fatigue knocking her out

So we're going to carry on with it and see if the improvement holds out, but not getting too hopeful quite yet :)
