hi. i would like some info regarding eczema. i will start from the beginning.

when my baby was born (he is now 20 weeks) he had acne type spots which i was told would go in time and not to be concerned. at my post- natal check the GP noticed his spots and said the same thing and that by his 8 week immunisations they would have gone. at his 8 week check they hadnt gone and by this time the spots had turned into an eczema type rash, the GP said it was sebberoheic eczema (not sure if spelling is correct) and not to worry it will go in time and its not like regular eczema. anyway the following week it had got really bad, he had crusty yellow skin and it looked awful. we phoned the surgery and saw a different doctor who prescribed fucillin h which did clear his skin, but within days it was bad again. so back we went and at this stage his skin was at its worst. the doctor sent us straight to the hospital. the doctors there didnt have a clue and just sent us home with a tub of diprobase (which is rubbish). anyway, nothing much changed and at his 12 week immunisations i asked to see the GP who prescribed daktakort cream and oitment (yet another steroid) which again cleared but when we run out of it, the skin was back to being bad again. we have been back and forth to the docs and have been precribed yet another cream called fucibet and more daktacort. apparantley the fucibet is very potent we have since been told by different health professionals. i was also told by a paedatric consultant (i took my DD to see the consultant for a different reason and she noticed babys eczema) that she wouldnt of prescibed any of those creams for his skin and that he not only has seborrheic eczema he has atopic. she said he needs a mild hydrocortisone and emoillent.

anyway in the meantime i had a visit from my Health Visitor who obviously noticed how bad his skin was and prescribed epiderm and oilatum for the bath, she told me to stop using the steroid creams and was quite annoyed that he had been prescribed so many. she also referred him to an eczema nurse who was absolutely brilliant and sat down and told us all about eczema and what creams were the best for him. she told us to stop the creams the GP had prescribed BUT did say he needed a mild steroid as his skin was on the verge of infection and prescirbed eumovate and epiderm and told us how to use it properly. she prescribed these tights and vests too which are excellent they really keep the creams in wheras clothes rub them off. we have done as the nurse said and i can honestly say, his skin has never been better. she told us that although diprobase is good, my baby needed something more than that and with diprobase u have to apply it every hour.

i just wish the GP had sent us to the eczema nurse in the 1st place as she obviously knows more about eczema than the GP and even the doctors at the hospital (maybe it was just those particular doctors). the eczema nurse got a doctor to check him over and he agreed totally with her.
in the meantime, my GP referred us to a dermatologist and we had a really quick appt considering there was a huge waiting list. she said that because he has seberrhoic eczema aswell, epaderm, although good, was too greasy and thick and probably blocking his pores, hence the eczema returning all the time. so she prescribed, trimovate and cetrabane. have any of u used any of the creams mentioned and have any of u got a child with the 2 eczemas?

im sorry to waffle on and this post is so long but wondered if any of u had any info on what creams u found to be the best? especially for seborrheic eczema.

thanks for any info

i don't know much about eczema as it is on dh's side of the family but now learning as dd has inherited his skin. you just taught me the names of the two types of eczema and it looks like dd has both.

i was mardy with the gp and pushed for a paediatrician appt quite early on. the paediatrician referred to a dermatologist who we just saw yesterday.

My first problem was been given the emollients but not instructed how to use it properly so dd has suffered needlessly. Was also prescribed fucidin h when it got bad which worked really well. the key to keeping the eczema under control has been constant (at least 2x daily) moisturising.

Since being shown how to use emollients properly (last 6 weeks) we have been using epaderm in the bath with olive oil & sudocream together after drying off and in the morning.

Dermatologist yesterday has shown how to apply Epaderm on the skin when it is dry too so will stop using the olive oil & sudocream. She has also shown me the basics of wet wrapping but I can't say I am ready to try that yet.

I was using Aveeno cream unsuccessfully before I was shown how to use emollients (Emulsifying Ointment similar to Epaderm) properly.

Just 2 days before seeing the Dermatologist, I tried the Aveeno cream after bathing with Epaderm and got the best results so far. Told this to Dermatologist and she recommended asking the gp to prescribe it.

She has given me a handy colour picture chart with tailored instructions on how to use the different prescribed medications. She now has dermol 500 for the bath when its worse as well as a hydrocortisone w/out an antibiotic and Viofrom Hydrocortisone. Dermatologist said she prefers Vioform to Fucidin H because Vioform does not develop resistance like Fucidin does.

Also since I told her of the great results with Aveeno she recommended tying value oatmeal in a sock and adding it to bathwater. Have read on MN before that it works. I tried it tonight for the first time.

My son also has these 2 kinds of eczmea. Infantile seborrhoeic eczema is more commonly known as cradle cap, but can be found on other parts of the body and spreads quickly. This is how ds's started. He still has cradle cap, but at least it is only on his head

Hi, my baby had eczema when she was six weeks old and was cured with homeopathic treatment. My doctor told me to put a handful of oats in a cloth and run it under the tap, bath my baby in the water as this was soothing, I used to rub her body with safflower oil as well. She is 25 years old today and has never had another sign of the eczema! In fact her skin is beautiful!! from Puk

mills - I believe I 'know' you from the BW AN club? Anyway, we're still having endless trouble with DSs skin but GP has prescribed an antihistamine for him today to stop the itch so I'll keep you posted on whether it works or not.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your child's skin problems. I just want to say, with myself having seborrheic dermatitis and tried many creams. The only one I can truly say works for me, as you have yourself is the daktocart cream (not lotion) . As it's advised against constant use, with being a steroid cream which can cause thinning of the skin.ive got a kind of routine which seems to be keeping it at bay. That is using the cream at an evening for a couple of days to take redness, dryness and soreness away. Then maybe twice, definitely once use cetraben, also use dermal 500 to shower. Then as long as I adhere to the routine, I will only use daktocart every 5 days for 2 days. It's keeping it at bay for the time being. And mine is really bad, stopped any socialising, or going in the day. Also I need nizarol shampoo for hair. I hope you find a solution of of sorts, i understand the stress and depression that can be triggered by such a problem. Just don't give up. With regards will73 x
