Adoption

Adopting from abroad while living abroad in a different country

Hi, we are British citizens living in Qatar and want to adopt from anywhere (already know Qatar is impossible). Does anyone know if it's possible to adopt from a country which is different to the country where I live and also different to our home country (UK).

Basically I'm trying to understand if adoptions from abroad are only possible if you live in the UK/US etc or if you live in the country you want to adopt from (local adoption). We don't meet either of these two situations and are starting to worry adoption is not possible for us!

Thanks in advance for your advice!

You wouldn't be able to get a UK home study without living in the UK (I think there may be some exception for military personnel but not sure.) I don't know what the adoption legislation is in Qatar and if you could get a homestudy done there (possibly privately.) There are several countries you could adopt from in that case. You don't necessarily need to be from the country you live in and get your homestudy done in, but you need to explore the specific legislation in Qatar...

Sorry I meant to add, adoptions from abroad are possible for residents of several countries, not just UK and US residents (I know people in Scandinavia, in Spain, in Italy, in Greece etc who have adopted internationally.) You need to be able to have a homestudy done though, and this is where you have to explore your options within Qatar. Hth.

You need to find a country that will let you adopt into quatar.

Then check out what its requirements are in terms of home study etc and see if you can meet them

Then check the UK legislation to see how you can get your child back into the UK I when you want to . So either you can adopt from a country where the UK recognises their adoption orders. Or you can live with the child in Quatar ( or elsewhere aboard ) for 2 years, then apply for a visa to bring them into the UK and re adopt them here .

The rules of all this change frequently so you need to check up to date sources
