Finding if someone has a criminal record

Sorry I wasn't sure where to post.

I've had an argument with a neighbour during which I felt concern for my safety and that of my family. (It was about us objecting to a planning application)

Is there any way of finding out if she/the other people who live there have a criminal record? I feel scared to leave my house and every time the doorbell rings I feel in a total panic in case it's her again.

I know for relationships there's a law you can use to check your partners criminal
Record but I can't find anything about checking other peoples.

Police have been useless.

You can look on Google, search your local newspaper’s website and on BAILII but other than that there is no way to check.

no, thats not public information

get a ring doorbell or other cameras and keep a diary of incidents

anything happens, log with police

Would it make you feel in any way better if she didn’t have a criminal record? (Putting aside that you have no access to that information)

And how were the police useless?

You do realise don't you that this is absolutely non of your business.

If you feel threatened, you should contact the police.

"Police have been useless"- is that shorthand for them not telling you what you want to know?

The police said it was a civil matter. Yes it would make me feel better if she didn't have a record of violence.

It is a civil matter if you've been arguing over a planning application. You can't find out if the person has a criminal record unless they've been convicted of something in which case you might find a Google article, although I can't see what the benefit to you would be other than justifying how wronged you feel.

The police are right, has she caused any criminal damage. You can put her name in wnd see if anything comes up. I would get a ring doorbell so you know if she knocks again, keep a record of any incidents a d report her to the police for threatening a d harrassment if that's what she is doing. Is it a regular thing or a one off argument, did she threaten you or your family. What do you think will be different if she does have a record.

At best it would show she hasn’t been convicted of violence, not that she wasn’t/isn’t violent.

I agree about getting a ring doorbell and keeping a note of everything.

why were you arguing.
what exactly happened.
you could contact the council planning dept and anti-social behaviour unit, if they have one.
contact your local councillor.
ring doorbell and pay the extra to store the logs.

There's always a first time. Agree, get a ring bell and keep a log. Cameras at the rear of your property if you can as well.

I bloody hope not.

Thanks all. I will keep records of everything and get more security cameras.

occasionally you will find something on local newspapers if you goggle "Fred Smith, Banbury, Convicted"
