Hi All,

I'm half thinking of arranging some screenings of old kids films at our local community centre. (I know you need to get the license etc).

I was just wondering how much people would pay for this, I am in London. I was thinking maybe £4/5?

thanks,

That sort of thing is run for free in our community to get people together.

We do this for free every month in the church hall, simple refreshments with a tin for pay-as-you-feel donations.

Where I work (much more affluent area) they run a community cinema night in the village hall and I think the tickets are £5 but it's aimed at adults with fairly new release films.

We are in Norfolk and our local village hall does this for £2.50 per person.

Thanks for the replies, just trying to work out if I could do it without losing money after costs. Donations actually a really good idea!

I would guess that hiring the room would be the biggest cost, luckily we have a room we use for free, beyond that the costs are minimal - we get cheap popcorn and decant it into cups, cheap ice lollies or choc ices for the interval (Tesco value ones), teas, coffees and squash and a plate of biscuits. We try and see if anyone has DVDs we can borrow rather than buying one.

What about donation for entry, and then sell the snacks to recoup costs.
What is your actual motive for doing this? Are you doing it to make money?

Depends on how old they film was. The children’s screening here at the cinema on a weekend morning is around that cost for a proper cinema and lots of dvds can be bought for that much.

Can you do this at all though? Isn't this a copywrite/distribution thing and can't be shown in public without the relevant licenses?

Our church does this once a month for families and every friday they have a silver screening. Its free but they have a tuck shop they make a mark up on.

Your full stop key appears to be stuck.

plus £75 for a license, right? - forgot to mention that, the licence comes out of the church general budget, they pay for all the required licences that cover stuff like youth groups, lunch clubs, family film events etc.

Yup you can get screening licenses from the BMI...was just fancying doing something locally as I like to do events really. Thanks for the feedback!

People value things more (and are therefore less likely to flake out on you) if you charge a notional fee rather than making it free.
