She's 3 - can anyone tell me how to make a decent costume? I'm really really untalented at sewing so it can't be difficult or involve a sewing machine!

You've got problems? My DS has to be one....he's not going to like it. If he was a girl I'd cut a hole in a square of sheet/tablecloth and wrap a piece of tinsel around her head, and waist (might need to sew a pice around neck hole too)....not sure ds would appreciate the dress effect though.

I did this last year for DD. Would offer to post you hers but after a year used for dressing up is now very tatty.

Got to Hobbbycraft or similar and buy couple of metres of plain white fabric, cheapest cotton they have, some gold cord (like they use for curtain tiebacks) or ribbon, and pack of gold pipecleaners

Fold fabric in half width ways, cut hole for head in middle, drape over DD and either just tie round waist with gold cord or similar or if too wide, cut both layers into vague T shape and sew up then wrap corn round waist.

Weave gold pipe cleaners into circle and attach to head with hairclips.

If you feel the need for wings make some out of cornflake packet, draw wing on both the largest sides, keeping edge of box as spine down the middle of them, cover the lot on foil and attach ribbons so can be worn like a rucksack.

OMG, do you have to make the costumes when your kids are in the nativity play then?

Can you cut arm holes out of a white pillow case? Trim the bottom with tinsel?

Use a man's white shirt, worn back to front so the buttons go up the back. Cut the collar off, stitch tinsel round the cut off bit and the arms and sleeves, go to H& M and get fairywings. Voila.

Sorry should be stitch tinsel round the bottom not arms.

Just cut the arms off to the desired length and stitch tinsel round.

Has she got a white summer dress? Have put DD in one of these with some tinsel on her head on more than one occasion, she announced yesterday that this years production is christmas creepy crawly and she was hoping to be picked as a ladybird or a worm

Agree with white pillowcase with arms/ neck cut out

Asda/Tesco do value ones v cheaply

You could just make slits which will give a cute toga effect rather than cutting a curve for arms & neck, IYSWIM

Don't bother buying/sewing metres of fabric which will only give the same effect unless you were going to follow an actual pattern.

Then tie white or silver ribbon round her waist to draw it in.

White tights and a hairband with a tinsel halo on top & you're done!

You can also buy wings in Claires Accessories.

I have had to make a donkey, rat, christmas tree, santa clause, snowflake in previous years and I can tell you I dread every christmas play.
