Alternatives to London?

Our parents had booked a weekend mid December in London for the whole family. Stay at a nice hotel, Christmas lights and winter wonderland at Hyde Park. In light of recent events in Paris they have got quite agitated and no longer want us to go to London at the moment. Although I would probably have gone ahead if it was just us, I respect their concerns and we have agreed to cancel. Luckily none of our DC knew as it was to be a surprise.
Question is - what can we do instead? Don't need to involve seeing FC as that is already booked. Something for a night or 2, in the south, that would appeal to everyone from a 5 year old to a 70 year old!

Agree about Brighton. Oxford is also fab in December as is Bath.
