My dc has expressed a desire for one of these for Christmas.

I'm clueless about them so what is the best way to buy one or do they do starter kits?

The starter kit mentioned by FullSwearJar is what I'd get. I also like the Pibow case (search on Amazon). There are some good books to help you get started. My DS is working his way through Adventures in Minecraft on the pi.
