Present ideas for hiker?

We have been asked from family member who hikes to get them something to do with that this year. A prismatic compass and decent socks have been mentioned but I have no idea what brands to go for and looking at compasses confused me. Can anyone help please? Is there anything else you can think of that's a bit out of the norm that they would love?

Is there a walking magazine subscription you can get?

Thanks Madame, a subscription never even crossed my mind. I'll take a look.

Silva is a good compass brand.

For socks, Bridgedale, Smartwool and Icebreaker are all good brands.

Try Cotswold Outdoor - their website should have some good ideas. Shop staff are very helpful too.

Has the hiker asked for this themselves? It's difficult to say without knowing what type of hiking they do, where and what kit they already have.

If they are a keen hiker, they will already have a compass (I hope).

Socks would be OK, but are a bit personal in the way of brands and types (if they are too thick or too thin they won't fit with their boots for example).

There are two hiking magazines that I can think of Country Walking (leans towards gentler low level walks) and Trail (more 'big mountain' including climbing and scrambling).

Vouchers might be better, so they can choose their own?
