Present worries??

1st world problem I know but wondered if anyone else is as much of an overthinker as me about this....

I have bought a lot of wonderful bargainous presents this year (Thanks Reastie, Isaac, et al) and so instead of stressing about the cost I have decided to worry about the following:

  1. DC have so many awesome toys, within budget, but when they inevitably talk about this at school they are going to sound like proper spoilt little rich kids 'AND I got SwapForce AND I got a tablet AND AND AND'. So I am going to remind them not to brag obviously.

  1. Will people realise that their presents are soooo amazing? I would hope most 30 something women would know that Elemis = luxury. Rather than 'oh more smellies' let down type of reaction. Ditto Osprey handbag. I have put a lot of effort into getting things that I think people will like because I do believe its the thought that counts; I want them to know I think they deserve something special but will they recognise that it is special?

  1. Will they also be on Mumsnet and just think 'oh she got me cheapskate stuff'?

  1. Will they also be on Mumsnet and KNOW ME?!?!?! (I do keep namechanging!!!)

I think you are over thinking this. You dc's will have a wonderful Christmas so look forward to it. People who are inclined to judge will do so regardless of your actions - it's not a situation you can avoid so don't bother trying.

I would love some Elemis gifts, regardless of whether they were a bargain or not. I would not normally buy myself anything other than bargain toiletries as I'm a cheapskate my family know this so get me lovely ones for Christmas and birthdays to keep me going through the year Grin

Don't fret so much, all is good Smile

I agree. Your DCs will always have other kids bragging about what they got (some true, some not so much) so try and put that out of your mind.

I would much rather get a small luxury item or toiletry as I don't buy that quality of stuff for myself throughout the year. And yes I would know that it's a decent present from the quality of the product and the packaging even if I didn't know the brand.

Been trying to explain subtlely to DP that it's quality over quantity with make up or smellies everytime!

I get the dd's quite a lot due to bargain hunting and the mn bargain thread, they rarely discus it with their friends, they might mention their favourite present but that's about it, I wouldn't worry.

I also worry about gifts I have bought for others not being appreciated so I don't bother that much Smile, I don't buy many gifts for other people as most of my family don't bother and would not appreciate nice things, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I'm sure your friends and family will love their gifts, of they don't then they are just ungrateful.

The year I bought my dd a huuuuge playmobil castle with all the extras she wrote in her book that she got a triangle. The musical instrument.

I wouldn't worry about your children's gifts at all. Just enjoy the fact that they will be excited. If you really think it's too much then you could always keep a few things for their birthdays. But, I would say just enjoy it.

Regarding gifts for adults, I have found as I get older that I have very particular tastes when it comes to things like bags/diaries/make-up/scarves and I would much prefer to choose these things for myself. Any toiletries given to me get given to charity, I just wouldn't use them. And I am in my 30s and have no idea what is/isn't a good brand - Elemis would be totally wasted on me. But that's just me, you know who you will be giving to and whether or not they would be likely to use it. I would always prefer a bottle of wine as a gift - that would always get used(!) - but then, that wouldn't suit everyone either!

Grin Savoy. Last year my dd got heaps thanks to the bargain thread. Amongst other things she got a tablet. When asked what she got for Christmas her response was rainbow magic books and a chocolate orange!

I love toiletries as long as they are not cheap nasty ones ( as I have sensitive skin ), clothes and bags are more tricky as each person has different tastes. I usually buy posh toiletries and food ( nice chocolates or biscuits ) for people, vouchers are good too.
