Xmas presents for my 8yo dd so far

I have started xmas shopping early for the kids this year and so far my 8yo dd has got:

Lord of the Rings DVD boxset, Minnie Mouse PJ twin pack, Bag, Knickers, Cathy Cassidy books boxset, Smurfs 2 book, Sudo-Kube (like rubiks cube but suduko), Mini Lego Sets x6 (from The Mail), Onsie, Lego Powerboat Transporter, Harry Potter Lego sets x3, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator book, A4 Notebook, Stabilo Neon Pens, Bedside Clock/Docking Station, Mickey Mouse Sweatshirt, Bikini, Harry Potter Cluedo. Still need to get: 'proper' swimming costume (for lessons), electric toothbrush, case for her ipod, Harry Potter Wii/DS game.

Stocking: Lego Mini Figure, Wooly Earmuffs, Perfume Stick, Lip Balm, Notebook, Hairband, Minnie Mouse Necklace, Earrings, Nail Varnish, Eye Mask. Will also get: Magazine, sweets.

Most of the above things she has mentioned she would like although she will probably have forgotten by xmas - she always loves lego, books & anything harry potter. There are a few surprises.

Have picked up some bargains so not spent a fortune but I have noticed that the older they get, the more you seem to spend!

I think that's an awful lot, no wonder you're finding you're spending so much! I hope she appreciates it all :) dd1 is 8 too, and wouldn't get a third of all that stuff.

That's a lot of stuff. Unfortunately I don't have the budget for big spends at Christmas, and tend to spend under £75 per child. They both lknow and understand why, and as it's always been like that - they are much happier with the idea of board games, charades and lots of family time rather than it being hugely present centric, however. If you can afford it, then go for it. Just don't get into debt for one day and a whole load of stuff that is likely to be looked at once or twice and them gathers dust on a shelf!

You've done much better than me, I've bought precisely nothing! We're scaling back this year and their 'budget' is £100 each. Ds is having the imeginext castle and I'm considering getting dd one of those tesco tablets.

Both of their birthdays are within 2 weeks of Christmas too so it's an expensive time.

Has your dd seens lotr already? Mines 9 and i'd d love to watch it with her but though it might be a bit frightening.

You've got her an awful lot. How does she see any value to what she gets?

Admittedly, I see you get her a lot of must-haves (PJ's, knickers, toothbrush etc) but even so, that's a huge list for someone who's got more to buy.

My dd is 8 and she will be receiving:

Lego cafe set
V tech Secret password journal
Hooded top
Barbie horse and rider
Sticky mosaic set
Pair of pyjamas
Argos my special friend doll

These things will be shared with grandparents too - I get the stuff and sell it on to them. E.g. One set will get the Lego set, the other will get the barbie horse and rider...

Her stocking will have stuff like sweets, lip gloss, socks, flannel, knickers, bobbles, clips, highlighters, notepad, stapler and chocolate coins....I already have a huge box which I throw stuff in for her and her sister which I buy in sales (sometimes as soon as December!!) and stash away for the stockings!!!

I don't feel the need to spend loads - some years she will get more. E.g. Last year they both got a bike as they had both grown out of theirs.

wow that seems like a lot but then we have 5 children so things have to be s[read a bit thinner here otherwise I wouldn't be able to move for toys and plastic tat games!

My DS2 is 8. I've got him:
Some PJs
Lego Cargo Plane set
Lego Heliplane
Hex bug V2s
A Christmas book to read on Christmas Eve together
A selection box
Some mugs to paint and decorate (he's really into arts and crafts)
A notebook and some pens

That's the entire amount he's getting this year and he's gonna love them all! I think buying a lot is fine and obviously your DD will love the presents but I've found on the years we've bought more per child then the whole day becomes very much centred around opening of present and finding batteries for toys, opening boxes etc. It kind of spoilt the magic of just being together, playing games, watching Christmas films snuggled on the sofas. I try to not make the day too centred around the gifts.

Dd will be 8 on Boxing Day, and we always have something under the tree from us, as well as Santa presents (the way we,ve always done in both families...meant older ones didn't have to answer awkward questions from younger ones so fast).

So between her birthday and Christmas, she's getting

Skateboard
iPod touch (she has DH,s old one for audio books at bed but it's dying)
Swatch watch
Pjs
Possibly an electric toothbrush, knickers, a few useful things like that
A book, probably Harry Potter and possibly another couple as she EATS books

(Not literally)

Sweets and fruit,
Probably a beano or similar
Jigsaw
She wants cluedo as well generally, that might be a Christmas gift

Perhaps a guitar as she keeps trying to play mine and can,t get her hand around the fretboard

It seems like a lot, but she is good and doesn't get spoiled generally. And all re things we know she will use and mostly has asked for specifically, many for a couple of years now. IPod she uses a lot and we know that "her" one now will fail soon. And we can afford it, we are not going into debt for them.

It seems a lot to me too but my DDis only 3. What about Operation? The game? It's cheap, is silly fun and you can all play it which is what Christmas is all about.

I don't want to get into an argument on here but feel I should just reply to a few comments.

My post was in no way meant to brag or show off. I was actually hoping for replies along the lines of 'this is what we have got our 8yo' ... Just being nosey really.

Bafanathesober - don't worry I would never get into debt for Xmas or anything else. These things have cost me less than £100 so far, ok I have a few more bits to get but don't anticipate sending more than another £50.
Loonietoonie - what's wrong with an iPod?
Bsc - yes, an eye mask! It's a jokey gift for her to use on the plane when we go on holiday next year (which she is not yet aware of). Oh and I hope your 7.6yo enjoys her paints.
Thelighthousekeeper - I picked it up on a preloved site for the bargain price of a fiver, inside everything is still in cellophane. Maybe try eBay?
Methe - no she hasn't seen LOTR but keeps asking. She will watch it with DH, I'm not really into that type of thing.

OP I don't think you should be put off from posting. There is always a debate about how much 'should' be spent on dc around Christmas on MN -'tis a tradition the same as all the others! Also, there are always plenty of threads with people listing what they have bought, so I don't know why people questioned why you had put yours on - maybe they are new to the site too .

I love reading what other people have bought. I am downright nosey and, yes, insecure enough to need validation from strangers on the internet about the amounts I have got for my dc .

I think your list sound's great op I wish mine had liked lego hoping dd3 will when she's bigger.

my DD1 8.9yrs at xmas has got the following:

5 DS games (brought off ebay in January)
Lego Friends Dolphin cruiser
One Direction tickets to Wembley in July 2014
A blue bottle mystery - an Aspergers adventure book.

Will also get a new pair of PJs & slippers for xmas eve (tradition of mine)

Stocking: Hairbands, pens & pencils, knickers, tights, lush bath products, a satsuma and choc coins.

Within our budget of £140.

I don't get the hair shirt people seem to don - making excuses for the amount they spend so as not to offend people who either choose to spend less or can't afford to spend more. I took the OP as a "these are the things I've bought & it may help other people and it would be good to chat about what you have bought for your children of a similar age" rather than a boast.

We all do things differently depending on our income/traditions etc. My OH were brought up in large poor families, we are much better off now and choose to spoil our kids at Christmas, they get far too much and we both know it. They don't get a lot else during the year, luckily they both have summer birthdays so get spoiled twice a year. They are in general very well behaved, work hard at school and appreciate what they have.

I like to see a big pile of presents on Christmas morning (as do they!) I don't get into debt but save for it and shop for bargains etc. We also buy some gifts for Charity organisations, but I wont apologise or feel emarrassed about the amount we spend.

I think if i wanted somebody to moan at my list of presents I would tell DH what I'vebought for DD don't be put off posting jubelle.

ha ha nannyplum, yes, often it is a bit of surprise for my OH too! - I can remember him being a bit reluctant to buy Nintendo DSs one year. I though "meh" and went and got them anyway while i could get the colours they wanted and at a price I was happy with. Then comes December and people in his work talking about the price of them shooting up and being desperate to get hold of any as they were sold out. I got a panicked call from him checking that I had ignored him and got them anyway :o
