AIBU?

'You look well!' FAT FROM PRAWN COCKTAILS

Went to a family wedding at the weekend. Sat opposite my lovely elderly grandparents who I hadn't seen for about ten months. When I first saw them before the ceremony my grandad bellows 'You're looking VERY WELL!! We hardly RECOGNISED you!!'

We had prawn cocktail for the starter. I love prawn cocktail. I joked that I probably could eat it for every meal (I DO NOT) .

I got a little letter from my Grandma today who has written exactly this:

'I see your love of prawn cocktails has caused you to put on a fair bit of weight! We were surprised to see you looking so bonny!'

I bloody well tried to lose a bit of weight before that feckin wedding aswell.

For the record, I am now a 10-12 where I used to be a 6-8 through starving myself I am small boned so possibly don't carry it that well but I'm not particularly short, 5"5. A combination of health issues and getting mightily pissed off with denying myself carbohydrates day after day as put it on. I seriously used to eat hardly anything.

AIBU to think I'm NOT fat, and even if I was, it's not very polite to say I've stuffed my face with prawn bloody cocktails!

sorry. I just needed to rant. She probably thinks I'm eating prawn cocktails for breakfast, lunch and dinner Grin

shuffles off to make prawn cocktail

Was your grandmother created by Victoria Wood?

'Malcolm we'll need to write a letter to Julie. I'm worried about all these prawn cocktails she's eating. soon she'll be like one of those ladies on a Channel 5 documentary, you know the ones Malcolm, the ones who have to be winched out the bedroom window. Now where's my good Basildon Bond set?'

YANBU OP!

You should make a huge prawn cocktail (use the money they sent), and send them a photo of you eating it! Jeeze, that note would make me feel shit.

It made me laugh too. I really wouldn't be offended. Id send a note back saying thanks for the £10 and say you really enjoyed eating a huge prawn cocktail.

£10 or not.. I wouldn't be impressed

They sound like they're from the same 'vintage' as my mother, who I love dearly, but who has no hesitation in proclaiming loudly how much weight people she knows has put on.
I struggle (and fail, mostly) with my relationship with food... I wonder where that came from??

Size 10-12? I wish I was as fat as you!

Oh, and you're not fat. At all.

YANBU or fat!! Some people just can't seem to help making a comment, my Aunty is the same-comments about other people's weight constantly.

Report
MagnumAddict · 09/08/2016 15:04

It sounds like maybe they thought you were too thin before and are trying in a bit of a misguided way to compliment you?!!

Report
NickyEds · 09/08/2016 15:04

Oh and with my Aunty no one is the right weight, everyone is either 'packing it' or 'wasting away'.

I've always thought bonny was a compliment. It means you look well and happy. Do i need to re evaluate what people have been saying to me for the last 40 years?!?! Confused

You know Dita Von Teese is famous for sitting in a champagne saucer? Well for this year's Christmas cards you could channel a bit of Dita and show your glam self sitting in a massive glass of prawns and Marie Rose sauce.

Perhaps they thought you looked too thin before and now look better.

Report
Crunchymum · 09/08/2016 15:08

Are you sure that you are not misunderstanding and your GP's think you look better with some extra weight?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/08/2016 15:08

OMG Bunty yes - OP spend your tenner on photoshop! I'm seeing giant prawns, avocado fans - actually, you could hold an avocado fan - one of them Duchess of York lobster fascinator hats, but made of a real prawn, natch, blobs of Marie Rose (lucky Marie Rose!) covering your unmentionables, and just a touch of iceberg frothing over the top of the glass...

Report
Lindy2 · 09/08/2016 15:08

Go and blow the tenner on a load of king prawns. You know your eating habits previously were not good for you. Size 10-12 at 5 foot 5 seems pretty much perfect to me. Not fat at all.
I love prawn cocktails too. I've always thought them reasonably healthy if you don't over do the dressing. Prawns and salad are low calorie and delicious.

That's made my afternoon as well! My nan is the same. She will look you up and down to assess current weight status and will tell you if anybody has put weight on in family etc. (So you know she is doing same about you to them.) I've realised it is her issue with her own size that is causing the comments. It does make me feel sorry for her now!

My grandad once said "I've never seen anyone put on weight as quickly as you have since I last saw you" Shock

I've wasn't fat then but have put about 5 stone on since

Report

soupdragon that's exactly how I interpreted it...if it was "your love of cream cakes" it would be insulting, but prawn cocktail is fresh and healthy, which goes with the description of OP as 'bonny' rather than 'chubby'. I think she is paying you a compliment OP.
