Best blanket hoodies for chilly spring days

We've tried and tested the best blanket hoodies on the market to narrow down a shortlist of the cosiest and warmest options, perfect for wrapping up in on cold days

By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Mar 4, 2024

Selection of the best blanket hoodies

Mumsnetters haven't been able to get enough of the best blanket hoodie this winter, and it's a trend that will be firmly sticking around in 2024 too. Designed to envelope the wearer with warmth (just like the best heated throw but without an electrical element), they are ideal for everything from boxset binges to icy work-from-home days, and even chilly beach or camping trips.

Thanks to their abilities to keep you nice and toasty, they can also save you money on your heating bills – along with other solutions like draught excluders, many Mumsnet users have found them to be invaluable when faced with the cost of living crisis and increased energy bills.

There's no doubt that Oodie reigns supreme when it comes to blanket hoodies, but their cosy designs don't come cheap. If your budget doesn't stretch quite that far though, fear not, as there are plenty of high-quality Oodie alternatives available. So, whether you’re looking for a super warm and cosy hooded blanket, a kids' blanket hoodie or a bold, patterned original Oodie, we’ve carefully collated a snuggly selection.

Plus, for more winter buys that have been tried and tested by Mumsnetters, don't miss our round-up of the best winter coats for women and most effective heated gloves.

How we tested the best blanket hoodies

Using independent recommendations from the Mumsnet forums – the largest online network of UK parents – along with feedback from authentic consumer reviews, we whittled down a shortlist of five that only features products of the highest quality. We then conducted our own extensive research, testing out each hoodie blanket and focusing on these key areas:

  • Fabric quality

  • Cosiness and warmth

  • How they washed

  • Value for money

I bought the Sienna version from Amazon last year for me, my son and his girlfriend. We live in them in the winter and they wash/dry really well. Cheap but decent quality.

Our verdict

Perfect for winter nights in, the Sienna is an affordable oversized blanket hoodie that comes in a generous one-size-fits-all design. We found the Sienna super cosy to wear; the warm sherpa fleece lining made it extra comfortable and toasty.

We also loved the small details like the elastic cuffs and large double-opening front pocket for storage. Even better, it’s machine washable at 30 degrees, so it was quick and easy to clean when we could be convinced, somewhat reluctantly, to take it off.

Admittedly, it doesn't match the quality or pattern choice that you get with an Oodie, but the Sienna is a fantastic alternative without the eye-watering price tag, and its excellent value is why we've awarded it our best overall title. It would make a great gift for winter too, especially bundled alongside a pair of the best women's slippers or a hot water bottle.

We have Oodie, Primark and Kuddly in this house. The best quality one is the Oodie, by far.

Our verdict

Despite being more expensive than other blanket hoodies, many Mumsnet users wouldn’t be without their Oodie hooded blanket and feel it’s certainly worth the extra money. The range of designs is hugely impressive and includes everything from limited edition, licensed prints such as Harry Potter and Disney, to fun patterns like avocados, pandas and dachshunds.

Thanks to the soft flannel fleece and warm sherpa interior, we found the Oodie was ultra cosy to wear. It was easy to clean in the washing machine on a gentle cycle too – just remember it's not safe for the tumble dryer, so you will need to wait for it to air dry.

It’s definitely worth going for a Bundle & Save deal if you’re stocking up for the whole family as they can be a pricey addition to your wardrobe. That said, you can now snap one up in their sale from as little as £39.

I have a Kudd.ly, it's beaten Oodies in some comparisons. It's very warm. I live in the south west, so it was actually too warm some days.

Our verdict

Probably the biggest competitor to Oodie right now, Kuddly’s range of large hoodie blankets have really grown in popularity over the past year, and they now claim to be the number one ranked oversized blanket hoodie in the UK. When we tried it out, we loved the the plush fleece, which felt soft, cosy and gentle against skin. Our tester also raved about the giant 6XL fit, reporting that it made her feel cocooned in warmth and comfort even on freezing days.

There’s the familiar extra large, deep pocket to the front for storing your essentials (why not stick one of the best hand warmers in there if you struggle with poor circulation when it's cold?), and we found it washed really well. You can also pop it in the tumble dryer on low.

It may be quite expensive at the full RRP, but the 30-day money back guarantee means you can buy with peace of mind. Kuddly also offer bulk discounts, so the more you buy, the less you pay per hoodie blanket.

Dunelm Teddy Oversized Blanket Hoodie

I find the Dunelm one easier to wear because it isn't as thick and warm. I felt a bit trapped in an Oodie and overheated quickly. The Dunelm is more of a fleecy dressing gown, except in the hoodie style.
See Post
Our verdict

This super cosy Teddy Bear Blanket Hoodie from Dunelm ticks all the boxes – it's long, soft and affordable at just £16.

It's not quite as thick as the likes of the Oodie (which may be a bonus if you run hot!), and Mumsnetters have compared it to a women's dressing gown in hoodie form. That said, despite its lighter feel, we found the Teddy Blanket Hoodie was still a warm option and it helped our Mumsnet testers keep the heating off when working from home. It was also very easy to clean, and kept its original softness wash after wash.

Coming in eight colours, there's not as much design choice as other brands, but overall we loved the furry texture and cosy oversized fit. A great value alternative to Oodie if you want something a little lighter on the body and the wallet!

Best blanket hoodie for kids

  • Large choice of colours and patterns

What we don't like
  • More expensive than some other brands

  • May be too large for younger children

I got the Oodies (kids' versions) last year, they absolutely loved them. I think they are really worth it.
See Post
Our verdict

Whilst many oversized blanket hoodies are big enough to sneak the kids inside too (and trust us, they’re probably going to want to give that a go), you may prefer to treat them to their own.

Once you’ve introduced them to this super plush, fleecy blanket hoodie, it’ll be hard to get your little ones out. The oversized style has a cosy fit with elasticated cuffs and giant pockets, and it will keep your rug rats warm when they’re snuggling up with you on the sofa or reading a book in their bedroom. It may be a little on the pricey side for a small version, but our tester certainly thought the quality was worth the expense, praising its softness and warmth. It also swamped her six-year-old child, so you'll likely get many years of use out of it.

It’s worth noting, however, that for safety reasons, young children shouldn’t sleep in hooded blankets – no matter how tempting that may be. If they are still chilly in bed, check out the best kids' hot water bottles for options to pre-warm their sheets.

Best electric blanket hoodie

OHS Electric Heated Oversized Hoodie Blanket

What we like
  • Easy to use

  • Heats up for an additional boost of warmth

  • Generous size for comfort

  • Cosy fabric

  • Three heat settings

What we don't like
  • Power bank not included

  • We needed to wear with a top underneath

Key specs

RRP: £24 | Size range: One size | Colour options: Four - grey, pink, navy and black | Material: Not specified

Our verdict

We loved the OHS blanket hoodie; it offers all the manoeuvrability of a standard blanket hoodie with the warming powers of a heated throw. And at less than £25, it's easy on the wallet too – though you do need to factor in the cost of a power bank as it doesn't come with one included. That being said, it did help us keep the heating down on chilly days, so it's likely to be worth it in the long run.

When we tested it, we were impressed with the three heat levels and how easy it was to use (once we'd managed to source a power bank that is). The oversized fit was also a highlight for additional comfort, though we did need a top on underneath the blanket hoodie as the hottest setting felt a bit too much against bare skin.

What's more, despite its electric panels it can be machine washed for added ease – just be sure to disconnect the power bank first.

What is a blanket hoodie?

Blanket hoodies (or hooded blankets) are basically a jumper with a large hood that doubles up as a blanket or, in more simple terms, they're oversized hoodies. They're not only functional (keeping you super warm) but they can be stylish and cosy too. Blanket hoodies are a versatile garment for your wardrobe and they're perfect for lounging on the sofa on cold days, wearing after a gym session, taking on a camping trip or keeping the wind chill off at the beach.

What material is best for a hoodie blanket?

The best materials for hoodies are cotton and polyester, or a blend of the two. Cotton is breathable and soft, while polyester is durable and moisture-wicking. Many blanket hoodies feature a soft fleece lining. Fleece is an extra insulating fabric and can be made from natural cotton or synthetic material.

Are Oodies worth the money?

The jury’s out on this. Some buyers rave about the appeal of an Oodie and say it’s worth the extra money with one Mumsnetter saying: "100% yes, I have a cat one and it’s genuinely the best thing I have ever bought". But other Mumsnet users think it’s overpriced and you’re paying for the brand name and cheaper brands are just as good. If you've got your heart set on an Oodie original, look out for their seasonal sales to grab yourself a bargain or take advantage of their Bundle & Save deals.

It’s super soft with an easily accessible kangaroo pocket making it perfect for lazy days on the sofa. And it’s reasonably priced as well at just £11.

How we chose the best hoodie blankets

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

There is a lot of debate on the Mumsnet forums about how to keep warm this winter, and blanket hoodies have been a popular point of discussion.

First up, we sought out the trusted opinions of Mumsnet users to get their feedback on the blanket hoodies they’ve tried, rate and would recommend to friends and family. We gathered their views on the best Oodie alternatives to ensure all price points and budgets were included in our guide.

We also looked out for any negative reviews, where Mumsnetters highlighted products that they felt were poor quality, uncomfortable, difficult to wash or overpriced. We make every effort to update our listings regularly to reflect changes in product availability, prices and updates.

Authentic consumer reviews

To bring you our definitive list of the best blanket hoodies on the market, we also thoroughly investigated genuine, in-depth customer reviews on brand and retailer sites such as Amazon and Marks and Spencer to get wider consumer experiences regarding the products on our shortlist.

Real life testing

Finally, and most importantly, we ensured every recommendation on this page was thoroughly tested so we could be confident that we were only featuring the very best. We carefully evaluated each product, scoring them on their cosiness, fit, overall design, warmth and how well they washed. We then gave each one of our best blanket hoodies an award title so you can easily pick the right one for your needs this winter.
