responds to photos of friends' selfies with comments like "gorgeous girlie" "l❤️v u loads"

I have several goddaughters dotted around the country and look at photos on their twitter accounts (only chance I get to see them theses days!) and they're all HD brows, cleavages, knicker skimming dresses and babyish talk.

Now I know I might sound like Great Aunt Prudish but DD becomes a teenager next year and I need stories from MN about teenager girls who are NOT like my godaughters.

Hmm.

DD doesn't do pouty selfies, but that's because I've spent the last couple of years taking the piss out of people that so, and doing the gun fingers BANG! at duck faces.

She does however do the fingers in front of face, snap chat filters and 'Mainz chose' bollocks.

Sorry

I've got one of these too...

None of mine ever have - for similar reasons - we also laughed at their peers who did.

actually my daughter doesn't do the whole pouting and 'stunning hun' thing, which I am v v glad about. BUT she has been excluded from a friendship circle that she had been in since nursery and I think a big part is that she just wont do the reciprocal pawing and preening on social media.

Mine never did and are now young adults. Lots of teens do it but lots don't.

The pouty photos look really stupid don't they. 💋💋💋

not sure what happened there!

" all HD brows, cleavages, knicker skimming dresses and babyish talk."

Mine (16) doesn't do any of that - nor pouting - but there is an awful lot of banter & (sorry) a huge number of selfies!

She's lovely though as are pretty much all of her friends!

I have a 14 yr old DD who doesn't do that - instead her IG posts involve a lot origami. She follows her school friends (some of whom do the poses, but are fully clothed) but mostly they post photos of their art drawings, sunsets, new trainers etc.

My DD is not socially sophisticated and goes to an all girls school where her friends all seem a bit quirky (not the "Populars" Hmm)

I think all teenagers are prone to doing daft and cringeworthy things like this. My niece was a bit of a tomboy as a young kid, plays football, is very sporty, intelligent as well as academically ambitious. Still does the eyebrows and duck face shite.
I think the best you can do is laugh then screenshot and save for future birthday parties / weddings / blackmail purposes!

Nah our dd haven't done any of this and neither do the majority of their friends.
Thankfully.

yup in addition to herself (!) dd puts up a lot of pictures of her sewing & drawing (& shoes, cats & rabbits!). She's at a mixed comp & ime the boys are far worse for pouting selfies ... don't think that you'll escape it if you don't have girls.

Mine is 19 and never did this.

What does 'Mainz chose' mean - not come across that one yet!

Mainz chose means that your best friends (Mainz) chose the picture you've posted on your profile (they've already seen the photo before in a DM, and told the poster to put it up). You also get 'Tagged Chose' which means the same but the people/person that chose the photo are tagged in the actual photo.

Clear? As mud Grin

I was about to ask about Mainz chose too! My DD is almost 27 so I didn't go through all this!

Why does it matter? Most teens are silly and OTT in some way.

Just be grateful we didn't have our own childhoods permanently recorded on social media.

Mine doesn't but she is a tomboy and not really into all that. She is not part of the alpha girl groups who I am guessing do.

My DD is 17, dresses exactly how she wants with no reference to what others might think. She has online friends, but just finds herself a bit bemused over the way some of them act.

Whitegrenache · 21/01/2017 11:04

Yeah I'm confused why it would bother you! I take the piss out of my dd (11) and her pals with the whole pouting duck face look but I think it's just a stage they all
Go through and yes like pp have said we did things similar when we where young but have no on line media to remember it by!

With the exception of HD Brows, knickers skimming skirts etc, my DD does constant selfies and tagging and the whole lot.

She's a perfectly normal, nice young woman who is just embracing social media and interacting with her peers, of whom some are into make-up and fashion, some obsessed with Harry Potter or Dr Who, others are completely obsessed with alternative music. Not all do the selfies. Most do the tagging and follow the new social-media etiquette of fishing for compliments, receiving compliments, returning compliments

Had I had access to social media at the same age, I dread to think of the embarrassment I'd have caused.

As it was I just strutted around in knicker-skimming skirts, body tops, Nike hi-tops and unblended, orange foundation, honking of Body Shop Dewberry perfume .

She will find her own way.

What you don't want to do is teach her that other people choosing to do different to her are sneer-worthy or somehow below her. That's for us as experienced bitter grown-ups to do, quietly and amongst ourselves.

Teenagers have one aim in life - to test boundaries and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If that includes posting a zillion duck face pictures, then so be it*.

*as long as us old people can snigger quietly and be thankful that our transition from child to adult isn't documented and available for all to see Grin

It's possible but given how many parents are posting 100s of pics of their babies/toddlers/school children on their own Facebook accounts, just for the likes, it's pretty doubtful too.

They grow up learning how important these images are, from their parents really.
