To have asked the receptionist to switch off the Lady GaGa video...

My DS is deeply embarrassed after a visit to the orthodontist. We were waiting in the reception, which had a music channel showing on a big screen - there were ten or so children/teens waiting for appointments. My v young DD was with us.

Anyway Lady GaGa came on with the video to 'Telephone' or whatever it's called. I've not watched it before but was a bit [shocked] at the video. When it got to the bit where she's wearing nothing but a bit of gaffer tape I (quietly) asked the receptionist if she would please switch it off as it wasn't appropriate viewing for my young daughter. It was quickly switched off without comment.

I then spent another five minutes being given snotty looks by other teens in the room and my DS is saying I need to 'stop being a grumpy old granny'.

AIBU?

yabu It sounds as if your DS was embarrassed by you and not the actual video.

Lil I know he wasn't embarrassed by the video - probably every teen boys dream Hmm - I was thinking more at the time of not wanting my v young DD to see it, not what he would think about it....

I love Gaga - and that video - but it's not appropriate viewing in an orthodontist's office, where children of any age might be watching. YANBU.

How old is your daughter? Was she even paying attention to the video?

Sex is everywhere. There is no avoiding it.

Spoiling everyone elses viewing of WHAT exactly? A childlike looking woman in the nude acting overtly sexual? She is so unladylike looking it actually freaks me out

Well presumably most of the other clients were teenagers given that orthodontics are pretty pointless for young children. So I think you were a bit unreasonable - they were probably anxious and turning the telly off isn't going to help. Couldn't you read a story to your DD instead?

No I couldn't! It was a big room, all the chairs faced the same way with a huge screen tv at the front. Maybe next time I should take some childrens books with me so I can swivel DD round on my lap so she can't see the soft porn on the tv Hmm

YANBU - inappropriate to have it on in a communial space used by children. Sod everyone else's viewing - if people want to watch soft porn (which is basically what these videos are now) they can do it with other adults. Am genuinely surprised anyone would think YABU to be honest Hmm

IMHO you were being precious. As has been said, IF your DD was paying attention to the video she could have been distracted instead of you expecting it to be turned off.

Tell your DS that it is your responsibility as a mother to completely embarrass him from time to time.

With this in mind, it's irrelevant whether your were reasonable or not.

And I didn't ask for it to be switched off, just switched over.

There were a couple of other v young children sitting there too, btw.

Tough one. I understand why your POV but also can see your son's perspective. In addition, it isn't really up to you what may or may not be suitable for other children to watch in a public space.

Had I have been in your situation I probably would have distracted DD by chatting or reading together and perhaps only mentioned a concern to the receptionist rather than asking them to switch it off.

This has made me wonder....

If what was in that video had been on a tv programme or film instead, I wouldn't have thought it could have been shown before 9pm. Is there a different rule for music videos?

Yes...that.

Some people like it and some don't like it. It's not really for the taste police to judge.

Personally I think your suggestion of bringing books next time OP, is a good one.
