If you’re fed up with navigating around your cluttered kitchen or simply fancy embracing your inner Marie Kondo, stocking up on the best food storage containers is a great way to get organised.

Whether you’re storing dry food such as cereal and pasta, herbs, or essentials for your morning brew, stacking containers can help to maximise space. Plus, they can also look neat and stylish alongside your kettle and toaster on your countertops or nestled inside your kitchen cupboards.

OXO Good Grips POP Containers are praised by Mumsnet users and consumers for their modern, slimline design and airtight lids. However, while they stack well, the price of the individual containers can soon add up. Does the unique push button lid make them worth the investment? Here’s the verdict from Mumsnet writer Lucy.

  • Easy to close one-handed

  • Airtight

  • Unique push button mechanism

  • Not suitable for reheating in the microwave

The OXO Good Grips POP Food Storage Containers make a great choice for those looking to get organised and systematically sort the contents of their kitchen.

While they are certainly not the cheapest choice, I loved the modern, transparent design, slimline stacking, unique POP lid and the ability to use one-handed.

It’s worth noting, however, that they’re not safe for freezer storage or heating up in the microwave, so they are much better suited to cupboard storage for things like coffee beans, pasta, rice and pulses, rather than for holding leftover meals to freeze and reheat.

OXO Good Grips POP Food Storage Container: design and style

OXO Good Grips POP Food Storage Container

There is a wide variety of different sized and shaped containers in the OXO Good Grips POP range, and as they’re mostly sold separately, I could easily pick the container that best suited my needs. A versatile choice, they can be used to store pretty much anything dry, even outside of your kitchen - including stationery, makeup and toiletries.

With a modern and contemporary design, I felt they were a touch more stylish than your average food container, making them ideal for keeping out on display on your kitchen countertops. However, unlike some of the other containers I also tested for Mumsnet, the OXO POP boxes are recommended for storing dry food only.

Made from thick BPA-free plastic, they have a transparent design that allowed me to clearly see the contents inside, while the white lid with a smart push button mechanism could be opened and closed with just one touch.

The sleek, rounded corners were really helpful and meant I could pour the contents straight from the container without spilling. There are even handy fill lines on the sides - a useful visual aid that prevented me from overfilling the box.

It's worth mentioning that while the OXO containers are great for countertop organisation, they aren’t suitable for storing in the freezer as they can crack. The lids are airtight too, but I would avoid using one as a lunch box or for taking food outside the home.

How well does the OXO POP Container’s seal perform?

OXO POP Container’s Lid

The airtight seal on the OXO Good Grips POP Container couldn’t be easier to use.

Unlike the multiple clips on the LocknLock Six-Piece Set and Joseph Joseph Nest Lock I also tested, the lid on the OXO POP is sealed with a simple press of the button on the lid, making the container completely airtight in an instant.

The container was so simple to use that I was even able to do this one-handed, which was really useful when cooking or madly trying to make myself a coffee while preparing breakfast for the kids. Due to its ease of use, the range would be a convenient choice for those with limited mobility or people who may struggle with the twisting motion of containers like the Sistema Snack To Go Capsule.

What are the OXO Good Grips POP Food Storage Containers like to store?

OXO Good Grips POP Food Storage Containers

I loved the OXO’s slimline square design, and the ability to stack them up tall to maximise space in cupboards or on countertops.

The sides of the POP boxes are also straighter than the Chef's Path Cereal Containers, allowing them to be stacked more closely together - a real positive if you have a smaller kitchen.

Unlike the Joseph Joseph Nest Lock, however, they don’t sit inside each other, making them a little harder to store when not in use. That said, they’re so versatile, that I think you’d struggle not to find something to store in them - my daughter already wants one for her skincare!

How easy are the OXO POP Food Storage Containers to clean?

OXO POP Food Storage Containers being cleaned

The OXO POP Food Storage Containers have recently had an upgrade to their design, with one major change being that they are now completely safe to clean on the top shelf of a freestanding or integrated dishwasher

I found the container really easy to clean by hand, with the curved edges preventing any build-up of food residue. The POP lid also comes apart, splitting into three pieces for easy cleaning. It does take a bit of patience to reattach the rubber seal after washing, but it’s a practical way to ensure no food residue is left behind.

Having washed the container both by hand and on the top shelf of my slimline dishwasher, I have yet to notice any obvious signs of use. The container has not warped, cracked or become misshapen in the dishwasher and there are no visible stains or scratches.

Price: are the OXO Good Grips POP Food Storage Containers worth it?

At the time of writing, the OXO Good Grips POP range costs from £8 (starting with the smallest size), with the price fluctuating depending on the size or shape you go for.

There’s no getting away from the fact that this is fairly costly for an individual, low-capacity container, but if you can afford to invest in a selection from the range, they make a versatile choice for getting organised in your kitchen. From their premium quality to the slimline stacking and one-handed airtight seal, they boast several unique features that easily make them worth the extra cost.

They’re also available in a set of five for £55 too, though this is obviously a higher outlay than other storage options - plus, you may want to pick the shapes you want to make your own bespoke set.

How we tested

I tested the OXO Good Grips POP Square Food Storage Container (400ml) over a fortnight, storing a variety of dry food items including pasta, cereal and coffee pods/beans.

During testing, I evaluated the container’s durability, quality and the performance of the unique push-down seal.

  • Tested over two weeks to store dry food on my kitchen countertops

  • Tested the ease of use and the performance of the airtight lid

  • Washed both by hand (spitting apart the lid) and on the top shelf of my dishwasher and assessed for any signs of stains or warpage

  • Cross-compared with other Tupperware products I've tested
