I bloody love the MN haircut.

I've been doing it for 2 years now. I don't even want to know how much money I would have spend in the meantime at the salon. It's so easy! And I have the confidence now to try different styles, different ponytail positions etc. Goodbye long layers, hello shoulder length cut! And I don't have to sit in the hairdressers chair and cringe because I hate it when they brush my hair due to an old skull fracture.

That and the mooncup. Saved me a fortune!

Brilliant!

Once my hair is long enough I shall start doing the same. I figure if I balls it up I can go to the hairdresser and get it fixed. Haven't had it cut since September so it must be just about long enough now.

Not the chop-your-head-top-ponytail jobby? I need to see photographic evidence of the successful outcome of this frankly terrifying-sounding practice.

Oh please noooo. Don't post a link. My hair desperately needs cutting and if you post a link I will decide to try it myself this evening after a glass of wine. Grin
Last time someone posted a link I had to sit on my hands all evening to stop myself from trying it.

Can you do it with frizzy curly hair?

Report
JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 15:08

Do you use proper hairdressing scissors or will kitchen scissors do?

I do it on curly hair - the key is to cut while wet-and-straight, and to not cut it too short because the layers will all spring up. My hair is curly but quite fine though, not sure it would work too well if your hair is thick.

ednurse what scissors did you use? How long does your hair have to be?

Damn it, I can't find the link I used originally. Basically you make as tight a ponytail as you can right at the front of your head, like a unicorn horn.

Then you cut it striaght across. The shorter you cut, the shorter your fringe will be. So don't go too close to the base of the ponytail because you'll look weird.

I don't like a fringe, so I cut a bit longer, normally, so I just have the right length for jawline feathering.

Then you have to chop into the now barbers brush-like ponytail to soften the lines a bit.

Then, voila. MN haircut. You can do it a few times to get the right length.

This time though I cut it all over, like a bob with with layers, still.

I use hairdresser scissors, but normal scissors will be fine if they are nice and sharp.

That is the singularly most terrifying thing I've seen all day.

My hair is thick, and not curly, but a bit wavy. You definitely need to leave a bit of bounce room so don't cut too short. Best cut long and slowly go shorter, checking in between.

I've been doing it for 2 years and love it. I hate the hairdressers and the last time I went to one was for my wedding 12 years ago.

I desperately want to try it but can't afford the cost of haridresser if I make a mess ofit Grin

My hair is the only vaguely pleasant thing about my appearance. The thought of indiscriminately hacking it off upside down with the bacon scissors is bringing me out in a cold sweat.

Wait til you need to go to the hairdresser anyway. Then if you don't like it and need to go to the hairdresser to get it sorted, well you were going anyway so you haven't lost any money.

You can see on my profile how it used to look with the basic MN hair cut in all the pics of me other than the one with DD in the sling.

Today it's much much shorter.
